here. You can get a wiring diagram for your model from the
Biker.net website. There is usually a mess in the headlight tub, lots of dodgy previous owner "fixes". Sometimes it pays to strip it all out and work your way through it.

I have a 79 yamaha
The transmission oil and the engine oil are the same. Use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. Automotive oil uses different additives and will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. 10w-40 oil is good for cold climate. 20w-50 for hot climate/touring. Synthetic oil will make your cycle run cooler and shift easier. Your final drive uses 80/90 hypoid gear oil. Synthetic hypoid oil will reduce friction and make your final drive run cooler. You will probably need four quarts of oil . Pour in three quarts and check the oil level. Top up as needed. If changing the oil filter you will have to run the motor to get an accurate oil level reading

Sounds like a float level may have been altered redicing the amount of fuel flowing into the carbs, this may not have been intentonaly addusted, undo the drain screw at the bottom of each carb with the fuel tap turned off and catch the fuel from each bowl as you drain them, this will give you an idea which carb if any is at fault, it may be the float needle sticking, blocked pilot, or main jet, if you think of it like the choke is a separate jet, when you turn of the choke the fuel is restricted, the only other likely fault could be a blocked jet , or as i have described above, also check the throttle slides are opening as you run the bike with the air box rubbers removed you may have a split diapram,

Hi, there is no off position on this tap, it is vachume opperated which means no fuel will flow from the tap in either the on or reserve position unles the engine is being turned over, so removing the fuel pipes from the tap will not cause any fuel to leak from the tap when in either of these positions, it will however flow in the prime position so avoide this position while the fuel lines are removed, if the fuel does flow in the on or resrve poss, the diapram is faulty and will need replacing
Im having a hard time taking my front shocks
jacke the front of the cycle up under the motor with the cycle on the center stand. The first thing you do after removing the front wheel and axle is to reach up into the lower fork tube with a hex key and loosen the socket cap that holds the tubes to the lower tubes. After the socket cap has been put back in loosely, you can now unspring the fork top caps. The spring pressure from the top caps is necessary to loosen the lower socket screw. The upper and lower triple clamps are the best way to hold on to the fork tubes. The tubes never have to be removed form the clamps. After you unspring the tops , remove the lossened socket caps from the bottom of the forks and slide the lowers off the tubes.
How to adjust the rear
You will need a spanner wrench it will fit in the slots in the spring. turn the spring clockwise and that will stiffen up the spring and add a little lenth. I hope this helps you .

Spring collapsed or button stuck. how to repair?
if you have voltmeter or a test light disconnect the the 2 wires from the horn and check to see that you have power when you push the horn button if you then its the horn you can try and use the adjustment screw small one with a lock nut press the horn button while turning the adjustment screw if that does not work replace the horn.
How much would a 1978 yamaha 650 would go for?
pending on condition and milage-$5000.00ish the best suggestion i can give you is check out black book listings as that is the lowest a dealer would give you on a trade-in and still be able to sell for a profit=mean more than they gave you. you will only get what the next guy is willing to give so maybe entertain offers and or possible trades know one can force you to say yes.

There is a excellent overview/troubleshooting guide of the troublesome charging system here to help you resolve the problem, as well as options to upgrade parts. When did this problem start? has the bike been sitting for any long period of time? any background on the bike leading to your problem would help.
questions
1. will the bike shift into gear not running all gears check it first put the bike on the center stand and rotate the rear wheel and go through the gears shifting if that is ok your good
2. shifting into gear bike running does not want to go?
grinds or lurches forward? problems from sitting for long months or yrs. sometimes when a motorcycle sits the clutch plates that are in oil will act like they are glued together ans some time can be freed after the engine oil has warmed up, in worse case you have to remove the r/h clutch cover and remove the clutch pressure plate and separate each of clutch plates and reassemble it.
Iigntion switch missing all wires cut how do get

If it uses 3 wires:
- red - mains B+12
- blue - parklight
- brown - ignition + 12
then shorting the red to the brown wire should supply ignition + 12 to the bike's electricals.
