2002 Suzuki Intruder Motorcycle, garaged. At random will start BUT backfires, misfires, electric flashes on and off then engine dies and stays dead. Dealer is stumped.

There are 4 version of the 2002 Suzuki Intruder Motorcycle. Please always include full 'year make model (size)'. It sounds like you need a new dealer! All the bigger bikes have a diagnostic port. Likely to be a sensor involved in ignition, or the ECM itself. It does appear to be a known issue. https://www.google.com/search?q=2002+intruder+starts+and+dies ..

After changing the spark plugs, and riding the bike for about10 minutes, I heard a back fire , and the bike started smoking, and gasoline leaking throught the tail pipes.

When you drove it for 10 minutes did it work & run perfect without any missing? One cylinder possibly started missing backfired and then maybe the carb flooded some how. I would pull both plugs first. Have a look at the plugs, then you will be able to tell which one was missing (wet with fuel). Check compression on each cylinder and then check the carb. I hope this helps.

How often do you change the oil on a 2002 Suzuki vs 800 intruder

Hi, it all depends on the type of riding you do. Mr Suzuki advises 4,000 miles between oil changes. This is OK if you do a lot of miles every time you ride. If you do a lot of short journey's then you need to to do more frequent oil changes. I normally do an oil change every 2,000 to 2,500 miles as I do a lot of short trips. One of my bikes has no cam shaft bearings and I do an oil change every 1,000 to 1,500 miles regardless. Hope this helps.

It can use either. What ever you decide, keep the same decision every time you change oil in the future.

Need owners manual for 2002 suzuki intruder

eBay has the service manuals, and occasionally has an owner's manual. The dealer should be able to order one for you.

Personally, I'd opt for a service manual. Much more informative.

How do I get to the battery to charge or jump start and or replace

The battery compartment is at the very bottom of the bike, just in front of the rear tire in a metal box, sitting between the exhaust pipes. There are two 10mm head bolts that hold a trap door closed to let the battery drop down and out. To take the battery out, you'll first have to unscrew the positive and negative leads on the battery. The negative is on the left side of the bike (same as the gear shifter) just above the heatsink looking piece of metal. Unscrew that first. The positive is on the right side (brake and throttle side of bike) and has a red wire connecting to the battery. You can see it just above the exhaust and brake wire as you look at the bike. Unscrew this second, then unbolt the trap door. On my bike, I have to lift up the exhaust pipes a bit to get at the bolts. Once the trap door is down, the battery will drop and you can angle it out with the bike on its kickstand. Check intruderalert.com for more info on Intruders. They have some indepth guides and pictures. I learned everything about my motorcycle from the guys there.

Hypoid gear old - 80W90 Available in a liter (quart) bottle at Walmart and most autoparts stores. The bottles are normally round squeezable plastic with a narrowing tip and a small red or black snap-on cap (cap is about 14 inch). Looks like a honey bottle. Quite thick stuff.

Headlight is out, how do I change it?

check the headlight fuse(s) first. If its good, I suspect the bulb. See if it comes on when you switch to high beam. If it does, but goes out when you switch to normal beam, its probably needs a new bulb. EU regs mean that its always possible to change a buld by the roadside to it should be fairl easy to find the connector and remove it, then remove the bulb and replace it.

My confidence in riding my motorcycle

Hard to tell if you are just starting to ride motorcycles or if you haven't driven in a long time. You have to learn to be confident on your motorcycle, and learn to feel comfortable while driving it. I would reccomend to practise driving it on roads with very little traffic, so you could get used to driving it, start by getting used to the acceleration, then get used to the counter-steering.When you are used to both the acceleration and the steering/counter-steering, you should get used to accelerating (not too much) while driving in curves, and letting go of the throttle while driving in curves (don't release it quickly, but to give less power to the wheels so it slows down). You could aswell drive along a road, where there is NO traffic, and drive forward and from one side to another, just like practising countersteering. The most important one, as I think, is to master to drive in certain speeds, DO NOT drive faster than you feel comfortable with! And do not drive past the speedlimit, unless there is clear sight and no traffic (and especially no cops ;) ) But I repeat, DO NOT drive faster than you feel comfortable with, even if you are driving with others, never drive faster than you feel comfortable with, that might cause a crash, that could even be deadly. If none of this helps for your confidence, you should actually just go for it, and drive, don't drive too fast in the start, and don't do hard accelerations. :)Sincerly, your fellow mc-brother :)

Bad neg. battery cable -melted

There are a few possible issues: 1) there is a short (positive and negative wires touch each other or another part of the engine compartment somewhere. This could be a spot where the insulation is damaged on the cables, a problem with the battery or the starter). If the new battery is even a little larger than the old one, the terminal posts or the cables on those posts could touch another part of the engine or the engine cover. Check that there are no clearance issues before replacing the battery cable end. 2) The new battery provides too much current for the wire gauge. (Think of the difference in water flow between a fire hose and a drinking straw.) You may need heavier gauge wire (lower number) when you replace the battery cables. 3) The battery terminals are loose. Some batteries require the terminal posts be screwed into the battery and if it isn't fully tight, the intermittent contact could cause this. Make sure that the post is tightly inserted in the battery (use a wrench). This can also happen if you jump start the vehicle and do not connect the wires properly. I hope these ideas help you determine the problem and avoid it in the future. Cindy Wells (corrosion of the cables or battery posts can also give the problem.)
