Intruder won't start battery gets hot
Could be the stators & regulator/rectifier if its over charging the battery. I'm not a mechanic just saw this video on youtube cause I'm having problems with my electrical system as well and trying to figure out the problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWU2TbEePsY

In the left engine side cover, and under the magneto. Follow the wires that go into the engine.
How do you change the speedometer light bulb?
Your '01 is probably the same as my '03. Take the tank 'beauty covers' off and the dash like you were going to change the air filter located under the center dash. Once you get the dash off, unplug the electronic cable from the speedo housing. 4 screws will release the speedo housing from the dash assembly. There are black grommets covering the bulb access (4 across the bottom: Low Fuel, Hi Beam, Blinker, Neutral). And 2 grommets about mid way on each side: these are the speedo lights. Just pop the grommet out and the bulbs are right under it. Replace and reassemble.

Sounds like you have some bad cells in your battery. Charge your battery and have it load tested. Check the voltage of your battery with ohm meter. Running the wrong voltage through your electrical system can damage some of the delicate electronics. You can jump your cycle from an automotive/car battery but do not have the car running. The car charging system can damage the motorcycle electrical system. If you push the starter button and the solenoid clicks , the starter button is good. If you jump the two battery terminals on the solenoid and the starter works, the solenoid is bad. If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter now works, then you need to replace the starter brushes. If there is anything else wrong with the starter you will have to replace the starter assembly, the manufacturer does not sell replacement parts for the starters.

Check the air and fuel filters. If it's not that, it gets a LOT more complicated, and is best handled by a qualified shop.
Is there any way to modify the stock exhaust on a
Yes, Buy a long drill bit and drill holes in rear baffels, I used 3/8 and started with 3 in each then drilled more as needed. But if you want it a lot louder you will have to drill from the front too. The drill bit I have is 18" long. If you can't find one like that you may need to use a drill bit extension.
About 40 or 45 miles
I would check for an intake leak one way to do so would be to wait till the bike was cool and i say this because if it is hot it is dangerous and spray some ether or starter fluid on the air intake and if the bike dies it has a leak this happened to me and it was a quick fix after i found the leak gaskets are cheap that is! Good luck
