Trouble shooting
try a jump start anyway. sometimes the battery seems good but it just isnt cranking out enough amps especially in the winter...might be time to upgrade the battery...or/then check for spark at the plug/wires
Clogged carb
Check the levers on the carb moves when you open the throttle, if it does suspect the carb.
Fuel in carb goes from the bowl out of carb toward cylinder through 2 carb jets. One is only for idle - ignore it. The other may be blocked. its a very small brass screw in item with a pinhole in it. Clean all the carb internals carefully, do not make pinholes bigger than they are.
Headlamps wiring
In the headlight there is the main globe (bulb/lamp) which generally has three(3) wires to it. This is HI beam and LO beam along with "common" (earth.....green).The small globe is the "running" light and the Brown and Green connect to this. This light comes on when the ignition (or lights) is switched on, off the rear tail light circuit. In the headlight "Nancelle" (the big chrome housing the headlight fits in to) there will be A: a GREEN connector and B: a BROWN connector. The green is earth and the brown is the lighting circuit for all running lights, just reconnect.
Plugs fouled
there are two ways plugs foul up is too much fuel or oil is getting in to the cylinders, does the bike blow excesive amont of smoke on start up and when you are riding, and is it one spark plug or all if it is a single plug and comes out black with oil then it could be a vave seal or it could be a damaged oil ring on your piston ,if it is doing it on all cylinders then more than likely the piston and rings need replacing and the bores to be honed or rebored to the next size piston and rings, hope tis helps cheers pete
Fuel leakIng out carb
could be a couple of things but it sounds like your floats are sticking if you take the bowl off the bottom of the carbie you can spray the float with wd40 or similar or bend the float down slighty
Misfire on front cylinder , will not exceed above 60mph
i had same prob with my 1999 sportster , misfire on front cylinder it was like this when i bought it ,i was lucky in that it was a simple thing , the plugs looked dirty /rusty ,i swapped the plugs around and my misfire moved with the plug to rear cylinder ,a new set of plugs sorted it . the next easy check would be bad / dirty fuel , then possibly coil/ electrics ,which im hopless at l.o.l so time to call in the experts ,hope its the easy fix good luck hannah
Cant find a wireing diagram
the wires are all color coded, whatever color you find in the tail light plug is the same in the headlight where it comes from the handle switch

A bad contact in the ignition system: as the bike runs the current flowing thru the system heats up the components, including the pins in a contact, that expand and start breaking the contact.
You will need to inspect all the contacts with the engine hot, starting with the contacts on the ignition module - under the tank, on the left.

Hello bragg, sounds like you either have a vacuum leak and/or a fuel delivery problem. If you can plug the plugs and check the condition it will help to determine which cylinder and carb is causing the problem. The pilot jet may be clogged, causing you to have use the choke. If the spark plug is a greyish or light brown color, that would indicate a lean fuel mixture. Black would be rich and fouling. Also check for vacuum leaks around the carb mounts...let me know what you find.
I hope this helps.
Lower carberator has fuel leaking
Either a carb float is stuck open or some trash is holding the float needle open. Remove the float bowl and use spray carb cleaner to remove any trash, or varnish, ( from evaporated fuel ).
Hello. I have a 94
Is it possible you have to many steel plates, have you by any chance put a metal plate up against the inner basket?a fibre plate should go up against this
Not realy a problem more
Not really a feasable option, the chain or belt driving the cams would be on the wrong side and the cam timing would run in reverse, there would be oil feed problems, the cylnder bolts would not be symetrical, etc in other words you would probably need to recast the crankcase and the rear barrel, make new cams, inlet tubes and exhaust.
but good luck with it
I have a 2000 VS1400
take in mind the setting that they give you is a base setting somewhere to start to get you in the ball park. your rear cylinder going have larger jets then you front due to heat. and where you live is going to affect the jetting as will. this is how you fix your problem. first what is everything set at i.e. main and pilot jet in front carb, needle clip setting (from bottom) and air/fuel. write this down send it to me. next what color is the front plug, what color is the rear plug. what you want is nice coffee cream tan.
Now you can't base dynojet jet sizes ex. o.e.m main jet 150 you could have a dynojet main of the same size but the number will WAY different. I have asked them a dozen times if once why they don't was oem sizing to make things easier on us and all the say "our jets, our sizing" write this info down we will need it later. Get it back to me and we will jet this thing right
fix it right, ride it fast

I only have a 4
hello. you would have to change out the 4 speed for a 5 speed IF one was available. For some models they are available and for others they are not. You might be money ahead to swap this bike for a 5 speed. Joe
