Pull the choke knob all the way out, put the shifter is in neutral, turn the ignition switch to on, make sure the fuel petcock is in the on position, engage the clutch and press the red start button. If it doesn't start in the first 10 seconds let it rest for another 10 seconds before trying again, otherwise you risk running down the battery and/or burning out the starter motor. Pulling in the clutch engages the auto-decompress to make it easier to start the engine. Once it starts let it run for about 30 seconds and slowly ease in the choke to the middle position. If it starts to stumble pull the choke back out for a while longer. Once the engine cylinder jug is warm but not uncomfortably hot you can push the choke knob all the way in.
The red cable is the positive cable. You can connect the black ground wire (negative) anywhere on the engine /transmission to any bare metal (unpainted and unvarnished). The shifter or brake peddle work just fine.
Take the battery out of the bike and hook it to a charger. Make sure it is properly charged and take it to a battery store to have a load test performed. From your description, it sounds like the battery is shot and needs replaced.
Hmm, do you have a voltmeter, check the voltage on the battery with it running, usually 13.5 to 15 volts If that reads ok, you probably have a short, get a testlight, pull off the negative cable off the battery,clamp one end to the cable and the other to the battery. If it lights up, you have a short, start unplugging stuff until you find the short and the light goes out!
The first thing to check is the battery, read the voltage with a multimeter, a battery in good condition and fully charged should read as 12.6 volts + anything less than 12 volts and the battery is u/s

Best money you'll ever spend is to get a service manual from say amazon for example. Tons of data usually 20=30 bucks. I recommend everbody gets one right away.
