CRF 450 Honda leaking oil through carburetor
it sounds like your valve/rocker cover to spark plug tube seal is folded over or something. My reason for saying this is, because the only place for oil to get into the plug tube is a bad seal to the cover or the spark plug isn't tight? and that hole is for expelling liquid so it doesn't cook the plug into the head
Spark plug replacement
You will have to remove the fuel tank to get to the spark plug. Not that bad of a job...2 seat bolts, tank strap and the radiator shroud bolts and fuel petcock. Thats it! good luck!
Crf 450 front preload adjustment
Hi ...... Any preload and/or damping will be adjustable from the top of the forks (even upside down forks). Anti-clockwise to reduce, clockwise to increase. You may find that a previous owner has increased the 'weight' of fork oil as a cheap/easy alternative to adjustment or aftermarket linear or progressive springs.
CRF 450 IS LEAKING OIL TROUGH CARBURETOR
Hi there
You should not have oil leaking from the carby. If you have over filled it with oil, then it may be coming from the crankcase breather and then into the airbox, and appearing to come from the carby. If you have not over filled it, then the bike may have blowby problems with compression gasses passing the rings, and in a similar manner forcing oil out the crankcase breather. Not sure about the hole in the side of the cylinder... do you have a picture? Unless its pouring out, or gets worse, I would not be too worried. If you have over filled the oil, maybe time for an oil change to get the level right.

Waterpump impellar removal
First you want to remove the water pump cover, under that you will see the impeller and it should have a 6mm bolt, (10mm head), that you will need to remove. Remove the bolt and then the impeller will lift off a "D" shaped shaft. Note that there will be a copper washer under the bolt securing the impeller, you should replace that every time you remove the impeller bolt because it prevents water from leaking through the shaft into the crankcase.
I am trying to replace
Hi jjb
To give you all you need to do change the plug, and swervide the bike, you can download a service manual for free from
here. If the the bike has been sitting for a year, to look after the engine BEFORE you start it, you should do a few other things also. A quick list
- The engine oil will need to be changed,
- clean and check your air filter
- Drain any stale fuel from the tank and carb, refresh it, prime the carb
- Remove the plug, and put a dribble of 2 stroke oil into the chamber
- Crank the engine over a few times with the plug out.
- Fit the new plug
- Start it up, it may smoke a little initially, but this is ok.
Before you go for a ride, good idea to go through the manual and do all the service requirements. Thanks for using FixYa.

NEED NEW ENGINE
Best place to start looking would be ebay or you local motorcycle salvage yard.
Bike keeps back fireing when first starting
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially, backfiring is a spark/timing issue or contaminated fuel (water) or as you stated stale fuel. AVGas would not result to backfiring but rather a stronger pull though would heat up easily.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
Pls be informed that due to my current rank and rating, even a
Helpful would be detrimental to my status. Should this solution not address
your concern, it would be appreciated if you could just not rate it at
all. Cheers.
Problem starting
sounds more like a slipped timing chain to me, big problem area on the big power 4-strokes, tokyo mods makes a manual timing adjuster, will make a big difference in longevity of your next timing chain, i wound also check the vaves to make sure the piston hasn't shaken hands with the valves
Top speed
On Thumpertalk, according to 4 different owners of stock to slightly modified CRF450s they all posted mid to upper 80s for a top speed.
