2003 BMW F 650 GS Questions & Answers
Bike feels like it is in deep sand at speeds under 45 mph.
If lifted off the ground, do the wheels rotate freely? If not, the wheel bearings will need to be replaced.
It could also be the steering head bearing. Turn the handlebars from lock to lock. You may be able to feel a notch at the dead centre point. It indicates a notch in the bearing race and it will need to be replaced.
2003 BMW F 650 GS: Battery constantly dies
Hi,
It sounds that something is draining the power.
You need to get a multi metre (circuit tester) that can measure AMPS.
With the ignition OFF test on the battery for any amp measurement. You should get a zero reading.
If you are getting a reading, you will have follow a procedure of elimination to find the drain (disconnecting each circuit individually until the problem is found)
FURTHER, have you had an alarm fitted to the bike ?
Cheers
Jon
What engine oil?
There is a repair manual for your model available, but it is in German. But there are some cs manuals, that should get you through.http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp . If all else fails ring your local "BMW" outlet.
Can I use a regular trickle charger on a GS650 or
You can buy a BMW charger if you want to spend some bucks that you don't need ;-)
The "brand name" BMW charger is the same as a C-TEK charger, they say it conditions the battery so you can leave it on charge permanently and it won't damage it. However, the cheaper models you get at Wal-Mart or similar only consist of a transformer, rectifier and some Zeners, maybe one or two IC's. This means you can leave the battery on for only about 2 days max otherwise it starts to sulphate and it slowly damages the battery.
I suggest you check the battery water levl, the connect a regular trickle charger to boost it. If you use it wizely it will be fine.
BMW F650GS cannot shift down from neutral to
Unfortunately I do not have the answer yet, but I will!!! I too am having the same problem with my 2006 F650GS I can easily, smoothly go up and down through all the gears but there simply isn't a first gear! It has been mysteriously replaced with neutral. I am totally down with time off here and there for virtually everything and everyone with the exception of first gear and maybe the sun!!!
Also the neutral light will not go off no matter what gear I'm in... it's like it's trying to fill in for first gear or something.
I've been told it might be a shifting fork but as you can see in the diagram below from
https://shop.maxbmw.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51602&diagram=11_2977
that 1st gear and 3rd gear share a shifting fork (part #10). Since I can easily use 3rd gear I should be able to use 1st. So unless I can get some useful information/advice on where to go I will take the engine out of the bike and tear it down and figure it out. What ever I find I will share with y'all!
