I would check the needle valve in the carburetor to confirm it does shut off, float level, and such in the carb. Doesn't sound like timing to me.

Hi Scott, is your speedometer functioning normally? The reason I ask is because the two are connected for proper function. Check the connection to your Turn Signal Module located behind the left side panel, look for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, if everything looks ok, replace the turn signal module. Hi Harleydazzle, and the usual suspects are:
1. Plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition or leaking.
3. Spark plug gap to close or to wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discarged.
6. Damaged wire or loose connections at battery terminals especially the ground cable at BOTH ends, ignition coil, or plug between ignition sensor and module.
7. Intermittent short circuit due to damaged wire insulation.
8. If your bike has a CKP sensor you must leave both plugs in
head and check for spark with a 3rd plug. Good luck.

If you have oil leaking from the sensor you will need to replace it.

No you dont!
Have a certified Harley tech handle this one. Most motorcycle starters are three bolts and the battery cable, NOT Harleys!

Check all the fuses, are any blown? It looks like the ones for headlight and ignition have blown.

Sounds more like the pickup coil. Take the ignition cover off the nose cone on the right side of you motor. Check the epoxy and the wires where they go into the epoxy.Because of the heat cycles, over time the epoxy melts, letting the wires move away from their contacts. After the epoxy cools and shrinks back down, allowing the wires to again make contact. If you see any evidence of the epoxy running down the pickup, replace it. It's an easy job, you just have to re-time the bike after installing a new one.

The problem is not timing. The problem is the piston rings not working as they should. Chances are the cylinders need to be re-bored or honed at the least. New pistons and rings will solve only the constant smoking. The smoke when starting is oil leaking past the valve guide seals. When the pistons and rings get done, get new seals in the guides or totally new valve guides. Have the vale faces re-lapped as well. When you are done, you basically have a new engine. Change oil more often. Dirty oil is what caused the problem. Please rate my answer. Thanks!

To verify that the coil is working, take the plugs out of the heads. Put the plugs back in the plug wires and lay the plug against the head so that they get a good ground. Turn you ignition switch on and then turn it off while watching the plugs closely. They should spark one time when you turn the switch off. If so, your coil is working correctly. It sounds like either the sensor in the timing cavity of the engine is bad or the electronic ignition unit is bad.

Good Luck
Steve

The wires from the stator come out of the primary just behnd the rear cylinder. Find the plug where the regulator connects to these wires. Unplug the plug and test the stator end of the wires.

Using a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) insert one lead into the metal contacts in the plug. Put the meter's function switch in AC VOLTS, 50 VOLT scale. Start the engine and bring it to a high idle. You should have at least 25 volts AC output from the stator.

Good Luck
Steve
