Toyota RAV4 - Answered Questions & Fixed Issues

Assuming all the ignition related systems are switched off when the key is out, your description indicates either bad wiring or a fried ECU.

As the car is 2008 and probably more of a wheeled computer than a car, it would be best to seek expert advice from someone with a clever laptop.

At the very least it indicates a bad head gasket that needs to be replaced. Once the cylinder head is removed then the actual cause of the gasket failure can be determined.

The cheapest solution is to replace the a/c clutch without servicing the a/c. Just leave the a/c off. Even with a bad compressor the clutch will still serve as the idler.

Your vehicle, like nearly all modern cars and trucks for consumers - should have a standard, 12 Volt Negative Ground electrical system.

I would guess that you blew the fuse for the compressor. Don't have any idea how.
This is based on everything else being operable.

You have water intrusion coming in from somewhere, and also check the body drain near the seatbelt mount is not plugged as well. Be aware that even a door seal on that side that does not seal well can allow water to come in at a certain place.
Replace that rusted bolt, use a SS 1 if you can, and use sealant around the bottom of it when you put it on.
Get into you vehicle in the heavy rain, and physically track where the water is coming from, or see if it's splashing up from driving through wet roads etc.

Check on the differential housing. If it's "by wire", it's most likely there. There would be a wiring harness or wire on the sensor that just snaps on.

Hello Debra Munro,

I am surprised NOT 2B finding "clutches" as a separate component... (sadly).

I would look to a Auto-Wrecker/Junk Yard before going to
an ENTIRE PUMP replacement (clutches are INDEED
as problematic as any other expendable part) ...

Only if it was sitting for a LONG LONG time..... the belt...no biggie..change it!! Now .. the pump..ask why it needs replacing.. MAKE THEM SHOW YOU WHAT IS WRONG!! ... and do not take "just does" for an answer!!! If they insist it needs replacing, DEMAND to get the old pump returned to you and make them show you what is wrong with it..If they won't... its lawyer or arbitration time!!! YES>> the mechanic COULD have easily damaged it!!

Is this going to be temporary or permanent? Total removal - They should just unbolt from the floor pan/frame. Consult your owners manual... all the info you need should be in there...

Hey Bart... this is too general a question... Does the engine rev freely in neutral/park? Does it do this in 2 wheel drive only - 4WD only or all the time? How old is the vehicle... how many miles.. condition of the engine..so on and so on..
Try to give us more details..
