I have a 2000 ford ranger xlt 4x4 w/ 4.0 engine.when i try to engage the 4 wheel drive the 4 wheel low and 4 wheel high light blinks back and forth for a couple of seconds.also it sounds like some kind of clicking noise coming from the switch.but it wont go into low or high. thanks for any help you can give.i cant aford to put it into the shop.when we get alot of rain i need the 4x4 sometimes.this problem started all at once.before that 4x4 worked fine.
The 4x4 system has a controller,or computer,called the Body Control Module and there will be stored trouble codes.To work on a system that's electronically controlled,you have to get the codes from the system.Every trouble code has a diagnostic route to follow to resolve the faulty component.I have read about Explorers having faulty door open/closed sensors.These set a code in the Body Control Module,and in the process,the BCM inhibits 4x4 operation,causing a no 4 wheel drive complaint.There is also an electric motor on the transfer case that can fail electrically or mechanically,along with speed sensors and fork position sensors that can give trouble.
The electric motor is mounted on the transfer case,on the back side.The motor is actually facing the rear differential.It is basically on the drivers side of the t.c..

thanks alot for the help.ill try that and see if that takes care of the problem.ive got a module that reads the codes.hopefully its something that just needs to be reset.if not ill check the electric motor.can you tell me where exactly where its located on the truck?
Lock the hubs in and put it in 4 wheel hi,going forward seems to work fine when I try to turn or back up it kicks itself out of 4 wheel
06 ranger 4x4 wont engage during freezing temp/snow. no clicking or light comes on when switched to 4x4 hi or low.
I cant go in to 4x4 high or low with my ESOF switch. I hear clicking, but it never engages, the clicking continues until the dash lights for 4x4 high and low start blinking. The lights blink 6 times every two minutes.
1998 Ford Explorer Automatic is stuck in 4 wheel high.
