I have a 97 safari van , hard to start , it will turn fine but just seem like either no fire or not fuel, was doing that for a while then for a reason I brought my batterie for check up and my batterie cells was no good, I got a new batterie, it started fine everytime for about 2 weeks, and now its start to do that again, if i turn the key the motor turns fine but wont start I have to shut it and try it about 3 or 4 time then its start, does not seem like its a batterie probleme but its weird that it was doing that when the batterie cell was no good.

Hey there boatright33,

A few things things immediately come to mind.

There may be a problem with the engine controller. You could check the ODBII onboard diagnostics. Auto part stores will usually do this for you at no cost.

When you pulled the ones that were/went bad, how did the filters look? Could there be particulate matter still in the tank causing them to fail.

I always put this one off until last. Check the injectors. Are they gummed up?

Let me know what you find out
Mike

Check your spark plugs. That could be one of the reasons. Or are you sure you purchased the proper Fuel pump?

Check for a bad distributor cap and or rotor..........a bad cap and or rotor can caues firing (cross fire)across the terminals and introduce spark to the wrong cylinders at the wrong time.......
hope this helps.....good luck!

Hello,

Humm I make the assumption that you don't have overheating problems. Yes, sounds like a thermostat is stuck open. If you have a gage on the dash you may also notice that the engine temp takes a long time also. Sometimes when you sit a light for a while the temp edges up and starts to get warm....then when moving down the road a higher speeds the temp cools off again. this does this because the thermostat may be stuck open and it cools the heated water in the engine when moving. Also, check the coolant level in the radiator. (only do this when cold!!!!!!!!) ok????? NOT HOT! low coolant can affect how the heater performs. (low volume)

Hope this helped. :)

Sometimes when battery voltage is lost, some modules may have to be reprogrammed or relearn? Do you have a security system?
You could always check the basics, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. Also, check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. Let us know what you find?

Replace the FUEL PUMP RELAY. Its located in the under hood relay center. This relay primes the pump with the key on, about 2 seconds, then the pump will not run until the engine has oil pressure, then the fuel pump is energized.

I have a 1999 GMC Safari. Van will drive fine for

see when you say you step on it, and the vehicle stalls, it sounds as if it bein starved of fuel...you step on it, and therefore the demand is there, but not the supply. to prevent itself from over heating, the fuel pump shuts off...after a moment of cooling off, it fires right back up...get it checked at your mechanic...do the strainer on the bottom of the pump, and fuel filter as well...is it time for a tune up yet?

My dad is having trouble starting his 95 GMC Safari Conversion van after it has been running. After setting overnight the van starts right up. If he runs a short errand, turns it off, then tries to start...

My 1997 safari was doing the same. After being shut off for a short period of time it started as if it was flooded. If I put the accelerator to the floor it would fire up. As well, I had no engine codes to report. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and everything is great. It was leaking fuel into the engine causing it to act flooded when starting. Once started, the computer system made adjustments for the leaking fuel so the engine ran fine. If you turn the van off and immediately try to start it, it should fire up. (don't give it time to leak extra fuel into the engine)
