03 X-type 2.5 129k. Plugs replaced @110k, MotorCraft platinum plus, all upper intake gaskets,breather hose,cleaned all connections. Problem-- stumbles under load, jerks. Code P0301 # 2 cyl. misfire. should I clean injectors?OR check fuel pressure, change fuel filter. misfire on one cyl?? I suppose it could be a bad plug.It has been jerking under load w/o mil for a while.This time it jerked hard and tripped a P0301. THANKS

It's most likely a bad plug or coil, try switch them around and see if the code moves to a different cylinder

  1. Install the valve covers and tighten the bolts in sequence to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  2. Install the valve covers.
  3. Install the ignition coils.
  4. Install the cables from the spark plugs.
  5. Install the intake manifold.
  6. Install the vacuum hose, fuel hose and coolant hose.
  7. Install the breather hose and air-intake hose.

03 ford escape idles at 1200rpm. cleaned iac replaced bank 2 sensor 1 o2 sensor vacuum lines plugs and intake gaskets cleaned tb iac . runs great 187,400. rpms drop to 850 when ac on. fluids good.

High idle is most often caused by an engine vacuum leak, use a can of carburetor spray and spray it around the intake manifolds (upper and lower), if there is a leak you will hear a change in the idle speed

I need to see a coolant system hose that leaks does the intake have to be removed

Yes there are cooling system hoses under the intake, here are instructions to remove the intake.

Instructions
  1. Remove the Intake Manifold
    • 1Drain the cooling system and relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Disconnect the negative battery cable, the air intake duct, the IAC valve connectors, the throttle position sensor and switch connectors, and the EGR solenoid valve.
    • 2Pull the EVAP canister vacuum and purge hoses, the vacuum hoses from the EVAP, the brake cylinder, pressure regulator and EGR tube. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires. Remove the distributor cap.
    • 3. Take out the three left bank injector connectors, the thermal transmitter, the ground harness, breather pipe and the upper manifold. Disconnect the fuel feed and return lines and plug them with golf tees to prevent fuel spillage.
    • 4Locate the right injector harness connectors and disconnect them as well as the fuel rail and injectors. Remove the coolant temperature switch harness connector and the water hose from the thermostat.
    • 5Loose the bolts on the lower manifold in sequence. Remove the bolts and left the intake manifold from the engine. Remove the gasket and discard it.
    • 6Clean the mating surfaces by scraping the old gasket material and carbon deposits. Clean the surfaces with solvent and inspect them for damage.
    Install the Intake Manifold
    • 7Put a new gasket in place and install the lower intake manifold to the engine. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows: first pass-35 inch pounds; second pass-78 inch pounds and third pass 70 to 84 inch pounds.
    • 8Connect the ECT sensor connector, the fuel supply manifold and the right bank injector connectors. Connect the fuel lines and then install the upper intake manifold. Put the breather pipe in position.
    • 9Install the intake manifold ground cable, the thermal transmitter, the left bank injector connectors and the distributor. Reconnect the spark plug wires.
    • 10Continue reconnecting all the components, reversing the order in which they were removed. Connect the negative battery cable to the terminal. Refill the cooling system with the appropriate coolant.
    • 11Start the engine. Check for fuel or vacuum leaks.

REMOVAL

1. Drain the coolant and disconnect the upper radiator hose.
2. Remove the breather hose (between the air cleaner and the head cover).
3. Remove the air-intake hose.
4. Remove the vacuum hose, fuel hose and coolant hose.
5. Remove the cables from the spark plugs. The cables should be removed by holding the boot portion.
6. Remove the ignition coil.
7. Remove the power steering oil pump and bracket.
8. Remove the intake manifold.
9. Remove the heat protector and exhaust manifold assembly.
10. Remove the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley.
11. Remove the timing belt cover.
12. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley.
13. Remove the timing belt.
14. Remove the head cover.


15. Remove the cylinder head assembly. The cylinder head bolts should be removed by using Special Tool, Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (09221-32001) or equivalent, in the sequence as shown in the illustration in two or three steps.
16. Remove the gasket pieces from the cylinder block top surface and cylinder head bottom surface. NOTE: Make sure that the gasket pieces do not fall in the engine.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean all gasket surfaces of the cylinder block and the cylinder head.
2. Install a new cylinder head gasket onto the cylinder head assembly. Apply sealant to the gasket and do not reuse the old cylinder head gasket.


3. Install the cylinder head bolts. Starting at top center, tighten all cylinder head bolts in sequence as shown in illustration, using the Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (09221 - 32001) or equivalent. Repeat the procedure, re-tightening all cylinder head bolt to the specified torque. (torque spec is Cold Engine 105-115 Nm (76-83 ft lb) )
4. Install the timing belt tensioner pulley.
5. Install the timing belt on the camshaft sprocket, making sure that the tension side is tightened by turning the camshaft sprocket in reverse, all timing marks are in alignment.
6. Adjust the timing according to "Timing Belt"
7. Install the rocker cover and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Rocker cover belt:

2.5-3.5 Nm (25-35 kg.cm, 2-3 ft. lbs.)

8. Install the timing belt cover.
9. Install the new intake manifold gasket and the intake manifold. Tighten the nuts and bolts to the specified torque.
10. Install the new exhaust manifold gasket and the exhaust manifold. Tighten the exhaust manifold attaching nuts to the specified torque.
11. Install the surge tank and tighten the nuts bolts to the specified torque.
12. Install the power steering oil pump and bracket.
13. Install the ignition coil.
14. Install the air intake hose.
15. Connect the vacuum hose, fuel hose and water hose.
16. Install breather hose.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Please rate highly if this helps. this is 1992, only thing I have, should be the same. Thermostat A poppet-type thermostat is used with the engine. When the thermostat is closed, coolant flows to the water pump through a bypass passage at the front of the engine. When the thermostat is open, coolant flows through the coolant outlet elbow (thermostat housing) to the radiator. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Replacement thermostats other than the specified Motorcraft or Navistar thermostats may result in engine overheat damage. The specified thermostat does not contain an internal bypass, since the by-pass is located in the cylinder block. Therefore, whenever the thermostat is replaced, it is mandatory that only Motorcraft E5TZ-8575-C or Navistar 1807945-C1 thermostat be installed.
The thermostat is a high temperature thermostat for use with a mixture of water and permanent-type antifreeze. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Do not attempt to repair the thermostat. It should be replaced if it is not operating properly.
Check the thermostat before installing it, following the procedure described in this section.

Removal
  1. Disconnect ground cables from both batteries. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with EEC, when the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the EEC processor relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
  1. Drain coolant from radiator until coolant level is below thermostat. Refer to Section 03-03, Engine Cooling.
  1. Loosen and remove alternator and vacuum pump drive belts.
  1. Remove alternator. Position alternator out of the way.
  1. Remove vacuum pump and bracket. Position pump out of the way.
  1. Remove all but the lowest alternator/vacuum pump mounting casting bolt. Loosen the lowest bolt and pivot the alternator/vacuum pump casting outboard.
  1. Remove the water outlet housing attaching bolts. Bend the radiator upper hose upward and remove the thermostat and gasket.
  1. Inspect thermostat as outlined in this section.
Installation
  1. Clean the water outlet housing gasket surfaces. Coat a new outlet housing gasket with Perfect Seal Sealing Compound B5A-19554-A (ESR-M18P2-A) or equivalent. Position the water outlet housing gasket on intake manifold opening.
  1. Install thermostat in crankcase opening with the copper pellet or element toward engine and the thermostat flange positioned in the recess. If thermostat is improperly installed, it will cause a restricted flow of coolant.
  1. Position the water outlet housing against the crankcase. Install and tighten the attaching bolts to specification listed at the end of this section.
  1. Reposition the alternator/vacuum pump casting. Install attaching bolts.
  1. Install vacuum pump with bracket and tighten to specification. Refer to Section 03-05, Accessory Drive.
  1. Install alternator and drive belt.
  1. Install vacuum pump drive belt.
  1. Adjust alternator and vacuum pump drive belts to specification. Refer to Section 03-05, Accessory Drive.
  1. Fill and bleed the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03, Engine Cooling.
  1. Connect ground cables to both batteries.

Need to replace the intake manifold

3.8L Engine (most common) Upper Intake Manifold To Remove:
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable.
    • Fuel injector sight shield.
    • Air cleaner intake duct.
    • Right spark plug wires from the ignition control module and reposition.
  3. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Fuel rail assembly.
    • Brake booster hose from the vacuum source manifold in the upper intake manifold.
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR) wiring harness heat shield nut, bolt and the EGR heat shield.
    • Throttle body support bracket upper bolt.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the following:
    • EVAP purge solenoid
    • Throttle Position (T/P) sensor
    • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
    • EVAP purge solenoid vacuum line from the throttle body.
    • Accelerator and the cruise control cables with the bracket from the throttle body.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold bolts and stud.
    • Clean the upper intake manifold bolt threads.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold by lifting the back of the intake and sliding the manifold forward from the throttle body support bracket.
    • Upper-to-lower intake manifold carrier gasket from the upper intake manifold.
  8. If the upper intake manifold is being replaced, remove the following:
    • Throttle body assembly.
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
    • Vacuum source manifold.
Upper intake manifold bolt torque sequence (3.8L engine) gm-03-38-530.gif

To Install:
  1. If the manifold was replaced, install or connect the following:
    • Vacuum source manifold.
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
    • Throttle body assembly.
    • Upper-to-lower intake manifold carrier gasket to the upper intake manifold.
  2. Carefully place the upper intake manifold onto the lower intake manifold. Ensure that the alignment pins in the upper intake manifold align with the holes in the lower intake manifold. NOTE: Apply thread lock compound, to the bolt threads before assembly.
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold. Tighten the upper intake manifold bolts in sequence to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • Accelerator and the cruise control cables with the bracket to the throttle body.
    • EVAP purge solenoid vacuum line to the throttle body.
  4. Connect the electrical connectors to the following:
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • Throttle Position (T/P) sensor
    • EVAP purge solenoid
  5. Install or connect the following:
    • Throttle body upper support bracket bolt. Tighten the bolt to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • EGR valve wiring harness heat shield, nut and the bolt. Tighten the nut and the bolt to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • Brake booster hose to the vacuum source manifold.
    • Fuel rail assembly.
    • Right spark plug wires.
    • Air cleaner intake duct.
    • Fuel injector sight shield.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Fill the cooling system.
  8. Inspect for fluid or vacuum leaks.
Lower Intake Manifold (W/O Supercharger) To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold.
    • Generator brace.
    • Drive belt tensioner with the mounting bracket and the heater water bypass inlet pipe.
    • Exhaust gas recirculation EGR outlet pipe bolt from the lower intake manifold.
    • Radiator inlet hose from the water outlet housing.
    • ECT sensor electrical connector.
    • Right upper engine mount strut bracket.
    • Generator brace bracket bolts.
    • Generator brace bracket.
    • Lower intake manifold bolts.
    • Lower intake manifold.
    • Lower intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold gaskets.
  2. If replacing the lower intake manifold, Remove or disconnect:
    • Water outlet housing bolt and stud
    • Water outlet housing
    • Gasket and the thermostat.
    • ECT sensor.
  3. Inspect the flatness of inlet flanges.
  4. Clean the intake manifold mating surfaces.
  5. Clean the intake manifold bolts and bolt holes of adhesive compound.
To Install:
  1. If removed, install the ECT sensor.
    • Tighten the ECT sensor to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  2. If removed, install the thermostat, the gasket, and the water outlet housing.
  3. If removed, install the water outlet housing bolt and the stud.
    • Tighten the bolt and stud to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower intake manifold gaskets. NOTE: Apply sealer GM P/N 12346286 (Canadian P/N 10953472) or equivalent to the ends of the intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold.
    • Lower intake manifold bolts.
    NOTE: Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the two hidden bolts and ensure they are installed.
  5. Tighten the lower intake manifold bolts in sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) gmpc_v6_5.gif

  6. Install or connect the following:
    • Generator brace bracket.
    • Generator brace bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    • Right upper engine mount strut bracket.
    • ECT sensor electrical connector.
    • Radiator inlet hose to the water outlet housing.
    • EGR outlet pipe to the lower intake manifold.
    • EGR outlet pipe bolt to the lower intake manifold. Tighten the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
    • Drive belt tensioner.
    • Generator brace.
    • Upper intake manifold.
  7. Inspect for leaks.
Lower Intake Manifold (W/ Supercharger) To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the supercharger.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the EGR pipe at the intake manifold.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connection at the temperature sensor.
  7. Remove the intake manifold and gaskets.
NOTE: The coolant bypass tube will release from the intake manifold when the manifold is removed.
To Install:
  1. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces.
  2. Install the intake manifold gaskets.
  3. Align the coolant bypass tube with the opening in the intake manifold and install the manifold. Tighten the bolts to 11 lb ft (15 Nm).
  4. Install the electrical connector to the temperature sensor.
  5. Install the EGR pipe to the intake manifold.
  6. Install the thermostat housing.
  7. Install the supercharger.
  8. Fill the cooling system.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

on a V-6 Escape isn't a really difficult job but it can be quite time consuming. If you're used to replacing spark plugs on a simpler engine you might be surprised to learn that you have to remove the upper intake manifold. It's not really as bad as it sounds. This is the order I do it in and not necessarily how you'll want to do it. You will need 6 spark plugs(I recommend Motorcraft) and 6 upper intake manifold gaskets.
Remove the plastic enigne appearance cover over the top of the engine. It has 3 8mm nuts that attach it to the valve cover studs. The Escape I worked on in these pictures had been worked on by another shop and apparently they forgot to reinstall the cover so I don't have a picture of it.
Loosen the hose clamps that hold the intake tube to the throttle body and air filter housing. Pull the breather hose out of the intake tube and remove the tube.

Remove the throttle cable from the bracket by twisting the cable housing and then remove the cable from the throttle lever on the throttle body. Remove the cruise control cable from the stud on the throttle lever by pulling it up. Don't try prying it off or it will break. Squeeze the tabs that hold the cruise control cable housing into the bracket and remove the cable from the bracket.

Remove the cable bracket from the upper intake manifold and tie the cables out of the way, probably to the cruise control servo.

Disconnect the TP (Throttle Position) sensor and IAC (Idle Air Control) connectors. Unclip the vent hose from the bracket under the throttle body.

Remove the vacuum hose and vapor hose from the Vapor Management Valve. The vapor hose has 2 tabs that you carefully pry apart to remove it.

Remove the vacuum hose from the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve and the 2 hoses from the EGR solenoid as well as the connector on the solenoid. The connector has a tab you squeeze to release it.

Remove the EGR tube from the valve. It takes a 1 1/8" wrench.

Remove the vacuum hoses from the back of the intake manifold.

Unclip the electrical connectors from the manifold. You don't have to disconnect the connectors.

Remove the nut that holds the wiring bracket to the EGR solenoid and position the wiring out of the way.

Tie the wiring and hoses out of the way.

Remove the 8 bolts that hold the upper intake manifold to the lower manifolds.

Stuff clean rags in the intake ports so nothing accidently falls into them.

Unplug the connectors off the COPs (Coil On Plug). Each cylinder has it's own coil.

Remove the bolts and COPs.

It's a good idea to clean the rubber boot part of each COP. I like to clean them with WD40.

Blow out the spark plugmag-glass_10x10.gif wells with compressed air and remove the spark plugs.

Gap the new spark plugs with a gapping tool to .052-.056".

Install the new spark plugs. Some people like to use a small amount of anti-seize on the threads. Others put them in dry.
A good way to thread the new spark plugs into their holes is with a piece of rubber fuel line hose over the spark plug insulator. That way you can feel the threads starting and you'll be able to tell if they aren't screwing in easily. If they won't screw in using your fingers and a piece of hose, stop and see why not. Crossthreading spark plugs is no fun. Torque the spark plugs to 11 ft.lbs.
Replace the intake manifold gaskets. They pop out with a small screwdriver or pick. Push the new ones into place.

Reinstall the manifold carefully. You need to set it pretty much straight down onto the lower manifolds to make sure that you don't damage the gaskets. Torque the manifold bolts to 89 in.lbs....not ft.lbs.
Reassemble the rest in the opposite order that you took it apart. Try working the throttle a few times to make sure it returns properly etc. Start the engine and listen for any unusual noises such as vacuum leaks. Once you're all done you can congratulate yourself on a job well done and think about all the money you just saved :)
