Leave the key in the first position for a couple of hours until the radio displays "code" in place of "off" then you will be able to enter the radio code.

The only way to unlock the radio without you having a code is the Volvo service center. They have instrumentation that they attach through the computer brain and unlocks the radio.
get in touch with a volvo dealership and give them your vin, and they should be able to geat the code for you. otherwise you may have to pull the radio out enough to get the #'s off of it, and give those #'s and the vin to them and they can give you the code.
If the radio is original to the car then they dealer can look up your VIN in the computer and print you out a sheet with your warranty information and it has the code on it. The service writers can do it from the service drive.
If you just have the radio, then the parts department can look up the code.
Factory Volvo radios have electronic locks in them to prevent theft. Any time that power is disconnected from the radio a code must be re-entered to make the radio operational again. This code is available from any Volvo dealer's service department but most of them want you to appear in person with the car (to prove ownership) before they will give the code. The instructions for entering the code are in the owners manual or can be easily described by the dealer.
If you do not have the code. look in owners manual some times it is written in there or there is a card with code on it. if not you need to go to a volvo dealer and they can get the code for you. You may have to pay them for it.
you have to turn the key to position 1 where the radio comes on but not your instrument panel. then leave it on this position for 2 hrs. the word "code" will come on instead of "off".Then you have to put in your 4 digit security code. to obtain this, call a volvo dealer and have them run your vin. they may ask for proof of ownership. if the radio has never been changed out, this will fix it for you! the radio says "code" if the battery was disconnected, and if the wrong code was punched in 3 times, it went to "off" :-) if you have difficulty, email me at savolvo at yahoo directly.
