My friend has a 1985 Delta88 Olds. with a 5.0L engine. The carb in it came off of an olds with a 4.8L engine. We thought that we had it adjusted right when the car idled and reved smooth but was idleing high. we adjusted the idle screw out a little untill it sounded right. the car idled for about 30 seconds, started rinning rough, and died. the car will start but takes a lot of throttle play to stay running even when we turned the idle back up. whats going on??!!

most likely idle air control sensor or low engine coolant I know sounds funny but IAC uses coolant to regulate idle. Idle air control valve or throttle body positioning sensor.

SOURCE: 1993 olds cutlass supreme 3.1 multi port loading up at idle

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Where is the fuel filter located on a delta88 oldsmobile 1985?

As I recall, that was around the time GM was making the change from carburetors to throttle body injection . There should be a very small filter inside the carb, just behind where the fuel line connects to it . Disconnect the battery, disconnect fuel line from carb and reach in with small needle nose pliers to remove. Also there was a "sock" filter located in the gas tank itself but, I'd check the carb filter 1st.
If it's throttle body, I think there was only the filter in the tank but, I'm not 100% sure on that. Your local GM dealer should have references available to let you know for sure.

Adjust timing on 1985 olds delta 88 307 engine

Timing set a 20 degrees as factory specified.

Keep Backing off of timing 1 degree at a time until you don't have a pinging during acceleration.

Laging valve timing can not be fixed by simply advancing the ignition timing.

Check to see that you have less than 8 degrees of valve timing and you will be ok.

Hope this tip helps

I have 1985 pickup w/305 the problem is the carb. it burns alot of fuel the carb has a mixture solenoid it wont pass emissions should i get a older carb like from the 70's or what is going on my uncle had...

your uncles olds probably has a 425 or a 455 engine in it. anyways, your carb, either 2 barrel or 4 barrel, is 24 years old and is in need of an rebuild. you call call around for an estimate or buy a carb already rebuilt and that should solve your problem. the older carbs will not have the same emissions fittings/hardware and would probably not pass an emissions test.

Vacuum advance for 350 olds rocket

There is a tube on the drivers side of the carb. facing the front of the engine. It only draws vacuum when you are giving it the gas. Is it a quadrajet? Get one from a 1970-1974 these are simple to operate.
