I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan. I got a "tune up" approx. 2 weeks ago with new spark plugs, fuel filter & air filter. It did fine driving around town & on a 130 mile trip. I filled up with "87" gas at a little gas station then all of a sudden these things happened all at the same time: the van started sputtering & wouldn't go, sounded like it was going dead, had a really strong gas smell & was blowing black smoke, battery light came on & the air conditioner was blowing warm air & when the van was idling it ran hot. My "check engine light" has been on for quite some time but when the battery light came on, the check engine light went out, then when the battery light went off, the check engine light came back on. All of this is very strange especially everything hit all of a sudden after I got that tank of gas. I was on approx. 1/8 tank then I filled it completely up. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!

Sounds like you got a tank of bad gas. That would easily cause your issues. Start by draining as much as you can, put a can of Seafoam in there, add a few gallons of fresh gas, drive to the gas station and tank up, and run that tank down until your gas light comes on before adding more. You may end up needing a fuel filter or plugs again, but with minimal run time on the bad gas, you'll probably be fine.

tune it up !!!! replace both AIR & FUEL FILTERS . spark plugs & plug wires, replace them !!! cap & rotor (distributor) , put fuel injector cleaner in tank, next fill up !

If you want fuel economy then dump this beast and buy a nice peugeot or citreon picasso diesel manual then you will get around 30 mpg around town and anything up to 70 mpg on a run ,try paying our fuel prices and this nice typical american petrol gas burner would be delegated to the classic car sunday drive out like my jag with its 4lt engine i can only afford to take it out once a month or so on a jaguar club run around ,other than that its my ford diesel manual escort with its 0 to 60 in 15 minutes but it only uses one tank of fuel a month.

Hard start, hot or cold, is not a starter or battery problem. cranks fine but won't start. has recent tune uo, injectors & throttle body cleaned, new egr valve, new fuel pump & fuel filter.

Check cables must be tight at battery & starter. You must have 12 volts coming out of battery to starter.
Pull your dip stick is it over filled or milky looking. If so you very likely have water in engine.
Can you turn the fly wheel or is the engine locked up?
Drain the oil replace filter remove spark plugs turn engine backward to unlock engine. Drain fuel and replace fuel filter. Remove air filter has it gotten wet? Now crank it over with Air filter & spark plugs out. Now put in new air filter spark plugs dry wires & coils. And start the car, If car starts don't drive drain transmission change filter. If it did not start you may have done damage to computer or wiring.
But you got to see if engine is locked up if 12 volts is to starter & that no water is in oil or fuel.

98 dodge caravan uses lots of gas

You do not say what mileage you are getting. Your vehicle will get from 12-17 MPG in the city and 17-24 Highway depending on many factors. Your vehicle is 11 years old and if it has near 100,000 miles I suggest you replace the spark plugs and plug wires. Keep the tires inflated to the pressure listed in your owner's manual and on the driver's door post. Replace the air filter every 30,000 miles. Drive the speed limit, and take off slowly. If you are getting near the maximum of 17 city & 24 highway, then there is not much you can do to improve mileage. So, exactly what mileage are you getting?

Tune up is a very vague word. But I would suggest, replacing spark plugs, wires, Clean throttle body, replace air andf fuel filters, check drive belt.

Temporary loss of power

have fuel pressure checked if ok should be approx 60psi.if ok try disconnecting mass air flow sensor connector to see if problem is eliminated. this the computer in to a default mode.the sensor is a common problem.thanks from schleck
