That engine normally operates around 220 degrees,if it goes above that the cooling fan engages and runs momentarily until the engines cools down. My problem is the fans are not kicking on at this point. When I am on the expressway the temp will stay at 196-197 degrees, and when I drive in the city and I am accelerating the car temp may go up some 200 -205. However, when I am stopped at a red light or if I just let the car idle the temperature will climb so I have to either turn car off to avoid overheating or I go straight to my destination which short distances to again avoid driving car too far... I think that Vincent is right. The most likely problem can be solved by replacing the the thermostatic switch. Before doing so, check the condition of the wires to the cooling fan. If they're OK then it's probably the thermovalve which is knackered and needs replacing. Check a technical manual on how to do this yourself. If you are confident that you can do it yourself then go ahead. If you're not then I suggest that you find a mechanic to do it for you.

When was the last time you change the thermostat and do a coolant flush?
The regular schedule is every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Do not drive the car because over heat can warp the Northstar V8 aluminum head and blow the headgasket.
Do the thermostat change + flush and fill ASAP.

Car over heats when stopped only

No the water pump would be very unlikely to cause this. Have the dealer scan the system and make sure the engine cooling fan is operating correctly (it is computer controlled). Keep in mind that the cooling fans do not engage until the engine reaches about 220 F. (+ or - 10 degrees)

Where is the fan temperature sensor located

actually, the ECM directing the sensor to actuate the switches. the engine thermostat is the actuator of the fans in the cooling system. and its located in the oulet port of the engine where the upper radiator hose is connected. (and or at the lower rad hose, some design on VWs).

Thermostat temp guage goes to 220 degrees

220 degrees is normal operaing temperature for your car. The thermostat does not open until 195 degrees and the fans don't come on until 126 to 128 degrees. If it gets over 129 degrees and the fans have not turned on then the cooling fan system is the cause of the problem. (cooling fan, cooling fan temp switch, cooling fan relay, etc.)

I have a ford taurus that the cooling fans will only run when when the ac is on 2002/ engine 3.0 efi/

The cooling fans on this vehicle won't come on unless the a/c is on or until the engine coolant temperature reaches about 220 degrees. Once the coolant has reached this temperature the fans will come and and run until the engine cools down to about 210 degrees and they will then turn off until the temperature climbs up again. The fans usually aren't on at all at highway speeds because enough air is being forced through the radiator to keep everything cool. The true test of cooling fan operation is to allow the car to idle in park with both the a/c and defrost turned off and let it run until the fans come on. When The temp gauge reaches about 3/4 of the way up, give or take a bit, the fans should come on. Keep an eye on the gauge so the engine doesn't overheat just in case there really is a fan control problem but I'd say you'll most likely find that the fans are working properly since they do come on for the a/c. Hope this helps!
