2009 Yaris VSS with manual transmission. Speedo and odo don't work and MIL has code Po500. No ABS light. Where is the location of the VSS sensor?

The Vehicle speed sensor comes from the combination meter , and that comes from the ABS ECU first . Could be a shorted wire , to ground , usually has something to do with the radio installation but faulty meter is a possibility .

Someter dosnt work code p0500 when code cleared eng light comes on as vehicle shifts into 2nd everytime same code reoccures

code p 0500 refers to vehicle speed sensor(VSS)--circuit malfunction===causes --wiring--VSS --- ECM
engine lights report on both engine problems and transmission problems
check all wiring connections to the transmission
the VSS reports to the transmission control module, the road speed and that is when the TCM knows when to change ratios
At this point I would be closely checking the wires and harness connections and then replace the VSS

I have a 1998 toyota corolla with a trouble code p0500- vehicle speed sensor malfunction- I recently replaced my engine with a used engine, that is still under warranty, is this something to do with the...

Hi.

In ordinary conditions the engine replacement should not result in VSS error. TI could not find any bulletin about ECM (the car main computer) reprogramming after engine swap but the VSS signal passes through two modules, the ABS and the ECM. If you have replaced the engine you may need to re-flash or re-program the ECM . There are a couple of forums where users complain about the same problem. The job can be done at the dealer place.

Before reprogramming the ECM do the regular troubleshooting for P0500. The problem could have been already there before the engine swap, the VSS or the VSS wiring may also have been damaged in engine replacement operations. Check the VSS mounted on transmission, Ohms are between 500 and 700, check also volt output on bridge. Check VSS wiring to ABS module and ECU and check the two-wire connector to VSS (check volts) . Check ECU connector. Check PNP switch.

Regards.

Will a bad vss cause transmission problem in corolla 2009

yes this will cause issues with the transmission. This also controls shift points depending on the speed of the vehicle and accelerator angle.

When driving the car the speedomator goes to 0 and then the tranmission starts slipping

There's a possible worn out clutch inside of the auto transmission. The speedometer going to zero could be the transmission not sensing speed, and then disengaging the transmission to keep the car from stalling at a stop sign, maybe.

Try looking at the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) circuit on the transmission.

Here are some tests that can be performed on the VSS:

A speed sensor. Courtesy of General Motors Corporation, Service Technology Group.
A defective vehicle speed sensor may cause different problems depending on the computer output control functions. A defective vehicle speed sensor (VSS) may cause improper converter clutch lockup, improper cruise control operation, and inaccurate speedometer operation.
  • Prior to VSS diagnosis, the vehicle should be lifted on a hoist so the drive wheels are free to rotate.
  • Backprobe the vss output wire and connect the voltmeter leads from this wire to ground.
  • Select the 20-volt AC scale on the voltmeter.
  • Then start the engine.
  • Place the transaxle in drive and allow the drive wheels to rotate. If the VSS voltage signal is not 0.5 volt, or more, replace the sensor.
  • When the VSS provides the specified voltage signal, backprobe the VSS terminal at the PCM and repeat the voltage signal test with the drive wheels rotating.
  • If 0.5 volt is available at this terminal, the trouble may be in the PCM (powertrain control module).
  • When 0.5 volt is not available at this terminal, turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the wire from the VSS to the PCM.
  • Connect the ohmmeter leads across the wire. the meter should read zero ohm.
  • Repeat the test with the ohmmeter leads connected to the VSS ground terminal and the PCM ground terminal.
  • This wire should also have zero ohm resistance. If the resistance in these wires is more than specified, repair the wires.
  • The condition of a speed sensor can be checked by going through the diagnostic routines for the system.
  • If this test indicates that a sensor is faulty, the sensor should be replaced.
  • Speed sensors can also be checked with an ohmmeter. Most manufacturers list a resistance specification.
  • The resistance of the sensor is measured across the sensor's terminals.
  • The typical range for a good sensor is 800 to 1400 ohms of resistance.

My 1998 Toyota Camry also has an erratic speedometer which jumps down to a lower or zero mph which after a couple of seconds causes the transmission to downshift and the engine to rev. Diagnostics have...

Check all the wiring from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) to the ECM, including all connectors. It seems that there may be an intermittent open (or short) causing the ECM to sense the vehicle slowing down/stopping.

Regarding the P024 Code

Hi. you can drive this vehicle around town for a while but, i wouldn't take it out to far away from the city. you don't want to get caught on an open interstate and lose the ecm. Here are some things you can check on during the troubleshooting process if you are doing it yourself.

1) Defective or corroded VSS connections
2) Maladjusted TPS sensor. The TPS should read about 0.42 volts at closed throttle
3) Defective speedometer cable
4) Bad or missing speedo drive gear(s) in tail shaft housing of the transmission
5) Defective VSS(possibility)
6) Defective ECM(possibility)

Please rate and god bless:)
