I changed the water pump on my 1996 chevy s10. In doing so I removed the alternator and bracket for easier access. I had removed the positive battery cable prior to all this. The only other things I disconnected were the 2 wires going to the alternator. After reassembling everything I have no power. Battery is good and I can test ground against motor and chassis. Nothing works. Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance for anything you can advise. Steve

Generator Replacement (LA1)

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure .
2. Rotate and secure the engine forward to access rear generator bolts. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L.

3. Remove the generator B+ terminal nut.
4. Remove the generator B+ lead.
5. Remove the generator electrical connector.
6. Remove the drive belt from the generator. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L.

9. Remove the generator from the generator bracket and position the generator above the drive axle.
10. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.4L.
11. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement .
12. Remove the power steering pipes from the power steering pipe retainer.
13. Remove the fuel pressure test port (schrader valve) cap from the fuel injector rail.
Important Do not disconnect the power steering pipes from the power steering pump.

14. Remove the power steering pump and reposition the power steering pump in front of the timing chain cover in order to provide access for the generator. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
15. Remove electrical harness from retainer on right fender well and position aside.
16. Remove the generator from the vehicle.

It's the bypass hose. It's a short hose that runs from the intake manifold to the water pump and is hidden under the bracket that supports the alternator and a/c compressor. Remove the alternator, unbolt and move the a/c compressor to the side, then remove the bracket to gain access to this hose.

2. Unfasten the alternator upper and lower bolts.

The alternator can be removed from above by taking it off its mountings, moving it rearward and lifting it out, being careful to gently move aside the refrigerant hoses, if equipped with A/C.
New alternators should come with a new bushing. If not, the old bushing should be used. Push out the pivot bushing as illustrated.

1. Mount the alternator to the brackets with the nuts and bolts. Tighten the two mounting bolts and nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
2. If the alternator and mounting bracket were removed as an assembly, install the assembly into the vehicle.
3. Engage the alternator electrical connections.
4. If removed, install the splash shield.
5. Install the drive belt and attach the negative battery cable.

Must remove the alternator and alternator bracket to access it. For the bottom bracket bolt, try using a ratcheting wrench for easier access, because there are A/C tubes there in the way. PITA job, but with patience it will go smooth. You may even replace the coolant temperature sensor while you're in there, it's 2 inches above the thermostat. You want this engine to be at a constant 210 degrees.

• DISCONNECT THE OXYGEN SENSOR CONNECTOR.
• DISCONNECT THE ALTERNATOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS.
• REMOVE ALTERNATOR BRACKETS AND MOUNTING BOLTS REMOVE THE BRACKET AND ALTERNATOR AS A ASSEMBLY.
• SEPARATE THEM ON A WORK TABLE.

Just did this over the weekend with my 2001 Nissan Altima. First, remove the negative battery cable to prevent shorting. Drain the radiator by removing the drain screw. To gain access to the water pump, I had to remove the upper radiator hose to the engine, unattach the reserve tank hose from the radiator and take out the reserve tank, remove the alternator and the lower alternator bracket because it blocks access to one of the water pump bolts and move the serpentine belt out of the way. This should give you free access to the six bolts that attach the water pump. You will probably have to hit the water pump with a rubber mallet or some other tool to break the sealant on the water pump, but it should then just come off. The hardest part of the job for me was removing the bolts for the alternator bracket because they were on extremely tight. Reinstall your new water pump after applying sealant to all parts that will attach to the bracket, and your ready to put it all back together. If you have the right tools, this should take probably 4 or 5 hours to complete.

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   
2. Drain the cooling system.
   
3. Remove the air cleaner.
   
4. Remove the suction pipe bracket for the A/C compressor, if equipped.
   
5. Loosen but do not remove the 4 water pump pulley bolts.
   
6. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
   
7. Remove the lower splash shield.
   
8. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt, if equipped.
   
9. Remove the alternator drive belt.
   
10. Remove the crankshaft and water pump pulleys.
    
11. Remove the timing belt.
    
12. Remove the oil level dipstick and tube.
    
13. Remove the alternator adjusting bracket from the water pump.
    
14. Remove the water pump rubber seals.
    
15. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts and remove the water pump from the engine.

2. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
   
4. Check the water pump by hand for smooth operation. If the pump does not operate smoothly or is noisy, replace it.
   
5. Install the pump using a new gasket. Tighten the bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
   
6. Install new rubber seals.
   
7. Install the upper alternator adjusting bracket and tighten the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
   
8. Install the oil level dipstick and tube.
   
9. Install the timing belt.
   
10. Install the water pump and crankshaft pulleys. Leave the water pump pulley bolts hand-tight.
    
11. Install the alternator drive belt.
    
12. Install the lower alternator cover plate and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    
13. Install the A/C compressor drive belt, if equipped.
    
14. Install the lower splash shield and lower the vehicle.
    
15. Tighten the water pump pulley mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    
16. Adjust the water pump drive belt tension and tighten the alternator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
    
17. Install the suction pipe bracket for the A/C compressor, if equipped.
    
18. Install the air cleaner.
    
19. Refill the cooling system.
    
20. Connect the negative battery cable.
    
21. Start the engine and check for leaks.

This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
   
   
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
   
4. Loosen but do not remove the four coolant pump pulley bolts.
   
5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
   
6. Remove the lower splash shield.
   
7. Remove the air conditioner compressor drive belt.
   
8. Remove the lower alternator cover plate bolts, loosen the alternator adjusting bolt, and remove the drive belt.
   
9. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
   
10. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
    
11. Remove the timing belt.
    
12. Remove the oil level dipstick and guide tube.
    
13. Remove the alternator adjusting bracket from the water pump.
    
14. Remove the water pump rubber seals.
    
15. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
    

To install:

1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
   
2. Check the water pump by hand for smooth operation. If the pump does not operate smoothly or is noisy, replace it.
   
3. Install the pump using a new gasket. Tighten bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
   
4. Install new rubber seals.
   
5. Install the upper alternator adjusting bracket and tighten bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
   
6. Install the oil level dipstick and guide tube.
   
7. Install the timing belt.

14. Tighten water pump pulley mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    
15. Adjust the water pump drive belt tension and tighten alternator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
    
16. Install the air cleaner assembly.
    
17. Refill the cooling system.
    
18. Connect the negative battery cable.
    
19. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for leaks and refill cooling system as necessary.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the drive belt.
3. If necessary, remove any splash shielding for easier access to the alternator.

4. Tag and disengage the alternator wiring.

It may be necessary to remove the alternator and mounting bracket from the vehicle as an assembly.



5. If equipped, remove the front alternator assembly mounting plate.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Temporarily loosen the water pump pulley bolts, 1.6L (VIN 3) engine only.
4. Remove the front air intake inlet pipe bolts, 1.8L engine only.
5. Remove the top hose from the air intake inlet pipe, 1.8L engine only.
6. Remove the air intake inlet pipe clamp and the pipe, 1.8L engine only.
7. Remove the power steering pump, 2.0L engine only.
8. Remove the power steering pump bracket, 2.0L engine only.
9. Remove the alternator B terminal cover cap.
10. Disconnect the alternator electrical connections.
11. Loosen, but do not remove the alternator pivot bolt and the tensioner mounting bolt.
12. Remove the drive belt(s); relieve tension on the belt by rotating the adjustment bolt.
13. Remove the water pump pulley, 1.6L (VIN 3) engine only.
14. Remove the power steering pump, 1.6L (VIN 3) engine only.
15. Remove the power steering pump bracket, 1.6L (VIN 3) engine only.
16. Remove the alternator tensioner mounting bolt and the belt tensioner.
17. Remove the alternator pivot bolt.
18. Loosen the bolt at the base of the adjusting bracket and rotate the bracket up.

To install:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

3. Install the alternator pivot bolt and hand-tighten at this time.
4. Rotate the adjusting bracket into position, place the belt tensioner into position. Hand-tighten the mounting bolt.
5. Install the drive belt.
6. Adjust the belt tension by rotating the adjustment bolt.
7. The belt deflection for 1.5L, 1.6L (VIN 5), 2.4L and 2.7L engines, is as follows:
   1. New belt: 0.22-0.28 in. (5.5-7mm).
   2. Used belt: 0.24-0.28 in. (6-7mm).
8. The belt deflection for 1.6L (VIN 3) engine is as follows :
   1. New belt: 0.13-0.15 in. (3.3-3.7mm).
   2. Used belt: 0.17-0.19 in. (4.2-4.7mm).
9. The belt deflection for the 2.0L engine, is as follows:
   1. New belt: 0.22-0.31 in. (5.5-8mm).
   2. Used belt: 0.33-0.45 in. (8.5-11.5mm).
10. The belt deflection for the 1.8L engine, is as follows:
    1. New belt: 0.23-0.31 in. (6-8mm).
    2. Used belt: 0.28-0.35 in. (7-9mm).
11. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-26 Nm) and the pivot bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
12. Connect the alternator electrical connections.
13. Install the alternator B terminal cover cap.
14. Install the power steering pump and adjust the power steering belt tension, 2.0L and 1.6L (VIN 3) engines only.
15. Install the water pump pulley, 2006 1.6L engine only.
16. Install the air intake inlet pipe and fasten the clamp, 1.8L engine only.
17. Install the top hose to the air intake inlet pipe, 1.8L engine only.
18. Install the front air intake inlet pipe bolts, 1.8L engine only.
19. Connect the negative battery cable.

They have step by step instructions with pictures on repairing or replacing just about anything on your auto. You can get them for around $20 - 25. Is yours a 3 or 4 cylinder? Auto Zone has a new service where you can actually look up repair instructions for your vehicle with pictures. Here's the instructions for a 3 cylinder for your year, make and model:
