2006 dodge charger 3.5 liter engine: *check engine light is on but is not giving any codes *Car shifts very roughly into different gears *At times, it will get stuck at a certain speed (20, 55, 75) and not accelerate anymore until car is turned off and restarted. Manual shifting does not work to shift gear, but setting cruise control and accelerating by using the cruise control does make it go faster. *Does not shift into reverse sometimes. have to move it to park and back to reverse a couple times. Is this transmission control modular or actual mecahnical issue with transmission? It usually works and shifts fine once car is parked, turned off and restarted. Check engine light remains on though.

This may give you some help. A bad wheel speed sensor will also activate the warning lights.

Check fuses first then bypass the brake pedal switch with a paper clip or its your shift lock solenoid under the shifter.

Have you checked for a broken valve spring. Repaired a dodge engine with the same running issue as you have described and it was a broken intake valve spring.

its might have something to do with your brake lights. if the computer doesnt sense the brake lights come when u hit the pedal it wont release the car from park. to temporarily get your car out of park, remove the coin tray that on the side of the shifter, just give it a good tug, ull see a pink lever the console, just push the pink level while shifting the handle and you'll be good to good. fyi u only need to push that pink lever when shifting from park.

I'm not sure of engine liter size? How long since a tune-up? I always check for codes, even if lite isn't on. Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free, if there are any, just tell them your lite has been going on and off.
Use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. I can give you fuel pressure spec because I don't know liter size of engine? Some vehicles don't have Schrader valve on fuel rail, which makes checking fuel pressure a little awkward.
If you have electronic returnless fuel system, you have a fuel pressure sensor, hopefully on the fuel rail. The yellow wire should be for fuel pressure, engine idling, use digital multimeter on yellow wire. 3 volts = 43.75 psi. 2 volts about 20 psi less. 4 volts about 20 psi more, so you get the picture.
The basics for a rough idle, check for a leak of some kind, fuel--egr--vacuum leak.

Check the SPARK plug condition, and AIR gap.

check the brake lights, the shifter has a safety feature that will not allow u to shift out of park if your foot is not on the brake and the brake lights are working, if the brake lights are working there is a bypass to get it out of park under a little cover next to the shift handle.
