Car Won't Fully Shift into Park

My 2002 Sebring won't shift (or "click") into park so I can't remove the key from the ignition and also can't lock the doors.

The car shifts into gears fine and the car runs well; but I just can't get the gear shift to "take" in park to remove key from ignition.

It's an automatic ... any help is appreciated.

Same here, won't "click" into park but dash says it is in P. Shifts downward to reverse, neutral and drive normally. Key is locked in the ignition. How I got the key out is by pushing the shifter really hard toward P and pulled the key out.

I suspect the linkage needs adjusting, and hope that there is not a transmission problem.

Does anyone know how much this will cost to fix?

You either have problem with the shifter assy, or the shifter cable has come out of adjustment.
If you remove the shifter bezel and center console you will be able to see the shifter cable. There will be a white or black lift tab on the cable. Release the tab and and place shifter in park. If it still does not go into park that means that you will need a shifter assy. If it goes into park with the tab released you push the tab back down with it still in park.

That should take care of your problem.

Try replacing the transmission filter and the trannie fluid. Mine would only go in reverse, and now it drives pretty well. This year has a screw on filter. Hope this helps

SOURCE: 1999 e-250. Automatic.

Sometimes this its a problem with the Brake Safety Interlock switch (generally this device is located at your brake pedal). Other possibilitie, could be a fuse controling stop lights also easily fixed for the cost of a fuse....

Additioanly, I suggest check the shift lock safety linkage cable, this request a little more work to fix, however check to see if you have an override fix, this is a small hole in the upper right hand corner of the center console where the shifter is, take cover off and insert small screw driver to over ride the lock.

Hope helps.

1999 Volvo S40 cannot remove key

What make vehicle ? Most all vehicles have a safety system .Don't try an force anything you'll break it !
Electronic Park Lock (EPL)/Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator: If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission and a floor mounted console gear shift, it has an ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in any position other than PARK and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of an ignition lock cylinder control actuator, and a park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column. They also have this on column mounted shifters !

Ignition stuck key won't turn to start car!

Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.

My 2002 tbird won't get out ofnpark

If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the RUN position and the brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake, turn ignition key to LOCK, then remove the
key.
2. Insert the key and turn it to OFF. Apply the brake pedal and shift to N
(Neutral). This allows the automatic transmission shift lever to be
moved from the P (Park) position without the brake pedal
depressed.
3. Start the vehicle.
If it is necessary to use the above procedure to move the gearshift lever,
it is possible that a fuse has blown or the vehicle's brakelamps are not
operating properly.

Ignition switch won't release key when it is put in park. But when I removed switch and key tumbler, the key tumbler/cylinder releases key. Why won't the key release when it is in park?

Most newer models have a safety feature called
shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back
to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park.
Depending on the model,
If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting.
If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch.
Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.

2002 sunfire key stuck in the ignition (run) position, won't turn off, no gages working, and will not shift out of park. now the service and theft system lights are on

Sounds as if the ignition cylinder is bad. You will have to replace it if the key is stuck. It is a lot easier to replace with the key in the on position as that will be required to remove the cylinder. If you get the key out and then the cylinder will not turn, replacement of the cylinder will be more complicated

My 2007 seabring won't shift out of park... Car

The car is probably on a steep hill and a lot of pressure is on the park pawl in the automatic transmission. If this is the case, a hard sudden pull should release it. Make sure the brake is on. When parking on a hill in the future use the parking brake before placing the lever in park.
