I have a 1999 nissan sentra. the clutch seems like it is going out and 5th gear is not working at all. do i need to replace it or can it be fixed? if it has to be replaced, can a 1996, 1997 or 1998 sentra model transmission be compatible with my 1999 nissan sentra?

Hello. It seems the 'shift fork' is either 'misaligned' and/or 'bent' in 3rd, 4th, 5th and REVERSE. It's, also, possible those gears are 'stripped' on their shaft(s); making driving that truck, in those gears, impossible. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.

Are you saying that the clutch is not working so that you cannot change gears while the car is running? With the engine stopped, and the car not moving, can you shift the transmission into the other gears? If this is so, then your problem would be a hydraulic or cable malfunction with the operation of the clutch system. If you have a hydraulic system, make sure that you have fluid in the clutch master cylinder and that it is working properly. If it is a cable system, make sure that it is working. c

The clutch isn't working correctly if you have to go through all that to get it into gear. You can check the shifter rails on top of the transmission, but that takes removal and dis assembly of the top cover on the transmission.

Sounds like the clutch is slipping. If the clutch is bad, it will slip in high gears (4th & 5th) but seem to work fine in lower gears. Clutch probably needs replaced but have a mechanic check it out first because it's a fairly expensive job. If your clutch is actuated via a cable (not hydraulic), it may just need adjusting.

Sounds like a bad overdrive clutch, it's in the torque converter and is not repairable, you have to replace the torque converter, this is somewhat common on high mileage automatics, usualy it sticks locked, when you put it in gear it makes a clang and unlocks, but locks up as you drive and won't unlock when you slow down like it's supposed to

sounds like this one simply will not go into gear at all, either the clutch is worn out (They're vry small snd weak) or possibly a sticking valve body.

this needs to go to the dealership garage, NEVER go to Mr Transmission type places they'll want to overhaul it whatever's wrong, they don't waste time on diagnosis

u could have a bad fork synicrow or gear better off replacing tranny or driving as is

i believe there is something broke inside the gear box which its easy to happend if u try to drive ur car without clutch .

It's one of these things. 1) You need secranizers for the gears you mentioned.(might as well put in a new Transmission) 2) The throw-out bearing is bad.3) The clutch is not ingauging enough for the gears to not want to go into smoothly.

P.S. I reread your information again. If it changes well out of the car then I would think it is the clutch itself causing the shifting issues.
