Hello, You can still have Ring issues with good compression. The pistons have different types of rings on them to do different jobs. The top rings are your power rings, the bottom rings are your oil rings.

The oil rings prevent the block pressure and oil slop from being drawn up into the cylinder. The piston creates a siphon action and the oil rings prevent the oil from climbing the cylinder walls. All it takes is for the rings to rotate around the piston and have the ring ends line up.

That is why you offset the rings on installation from 90 to 120 degrees. It staggers the gaps of the rings for a better seal. Now you can get oil vapor if the compression rings line up to allow compression into the crankcase through the gaps on the piston rings.

Sometimes the valve stem seals can leak and allow exhaust into the upper block if you have valves that are not seating correctly.

1.8) PCV - Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve

What is it? The PCV valve is a thumb sizedplastic elbow that is designed to relieve the build up of pressure in the crankcase. A pipe connects the PCV to the airducting. The function of the PCV is toreturn exhaust gases (blow-by of the piston rings during ignition) from thecrank case to the air intake.

Where is it located? PCV is found on the crankcasebreather pipe or cam cover

How does it work? Some pressure relief systems have a convoluted set of internalpassageways within the crankcase to allow oil mist to settle out and to allow excess pressure tovent in an unrestricted manner through a pipe directly into the air ducting. On other systems thePCV opens when the vacuum in the inlet manifold is low i.e. when the engine isrunning at speed and when the positive pressure of blow-by gases builds up inthe crank case. The PCV is held closefor the most part by the vacuum of the inlet manifold at idle. Often the PCV is unidirectional, allowing gas/airto flow only from the crankcase to the throttle intake. If the valve becomes clogged and stays closedthis can cause pressure buildup in the crankcase and this in turn causes oil toleak through seals etc. Alternatively ifthe valve stays open the ingress of unmetered air can upset thefuel/mix and cause rough idling.

Symptoms of faulty PCV

  • Erratic idling - If the PCV fails to close when at idle then the extra flow of unmetered air from the crankcase can compromise the ECU's ability to maintain a balanced fuel to air mixture. The symptoms very much mimic a leak in the air ducting.

How to check? Remove the PCV and first give is ashake, if it rattles freely this is a good sign. No rattle could indicate a gummed upvalve. **** and blow though it, one way should be easy the other way difficult. If the type of PCV is governed by a vacuumline then the passage of air through the valve will be restricted until asuitable vacuum is applied to it.

How to fix? It may be possible to repair the PCV by rinsing it out with a little fuel or carburetor choke spray to act as a solvent on the oily gunk that has gummed it up. If the valve is beyond reasonable repair then replace it.

I removed the oil cap and there was a lot of pressure coming out on my 2002 Chevy trailblazer ltz 4200 is that a major problem and also is there a PCV valve on this motor

First, there is a PCV valve, unless someone removed it.
A local car parts store or garage should be able to tell you where it is located.
Second, a lot of pressure ( usually called "blow-by") can be a problem.
Blow-by that is extreme can blow the oil out of your engine whilst you are driving it, and cause motor failure.
I should recommend you deal with the PCV valve first, and be certain the pipes and or hoses are good to it, as this has a lot to do with blow-by.
Other than the PCV system, blow-by can also be caused by worn rings on the pistons or worn valve guides.

I have 89' jeep cherokee went to check air filter and found alot of oil in breather box thought i had bad pcv valve but autozone says doesnt have one 4.0 litre throtle body fuel injection

The solution is to remove the grommet on the valve cover (for the small line) and replace it with a grommet for a 1985 CJ7 along with the PCV valve for the CJ7. Prior to replacing the grommet, you must bend a metal tang inside the valve cover using a screwdriver. This tang is what forms the "spring" in the built in CCV valve. Bending it up, opens the valve all the way permanently.

Next, take a 3/8 inch quick connect air chuck (the kind you screw into a blow-gun or tire chuck for use on an air compressor equipped with quick connect fittings) and replace the screw in nipple on the manifold (where the original tube attaches) with the air chuck. The chuck is an exact fit (threading and length)but has a much larger internal diameter for the crankcase gases to flow. Finally run a section of 3/8 inch fuel line from the newly installed PCV valve to the new air chuck nipple you screwed into the intake manifold. Attach a hose clap at each end of the fuel line and you're done.

My 89 jeep wrangler 2.5 4 cylinder has 2 holes in the valve cover. Front is for pcv valve. What is the rear hole for?

One at front usually goes to the air cleaner box...rear one is for pcv valve, but if cover was installed backwards they may be reversed. Pcv hole usually has a baffle inside to keep it from sucking oil into the airstream.
