I own a 2002 Mercury Sable and have been having AC problems. AC works perfectly in and around town. When I get on the highway after about 1-2 hours the AC stops working. I believe the blower works but only hot air comes out. If I stop for a while and let the engine cool down, the AC works perfectly again?!?! Last time this happened, looked like frost was coming out of the vents. Shut everything off, stopped for a bite to eat, got back in the car and everything has been working perfectly since. Took it into mechanic (dealership is too far for me) and they checked everything out. They could find nothing wrong. They let it run for about an hour and it worked fine. Said it could be condensation in the system and it would need to be evacuated??? (I think) Anyway, cost would be over $200 and they could not guarantee it would fix it. They told me to come back when it fails again. Which is difficult since it always happens on trips. What gives?? Any suggestions? Kathy

Hello Kathy... the condensation information is correct if that indeed is what is causing the problem. A small amount of condensate or a even a little bubble of air in the system will create a problem....the evacuation process pulls a deep vacuum on the entire a/c system & basiclly sucks everything out of it, debris, water, air, freon and all in to a closed "enviro friendly" containment machine...your freon can then be reused. My suggestion would be to call around to other shops and get some repair costs estimates for an "evacuation and recharge" for your Sable...
A specialtiy shop that deals only in A/C service might even be your best bet...but i would get at least 3 quotes. The dealers, or stealers as i call them, are almost always on the high side and have a catch that will get you a return visit. I hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions if needed. Like Papa always said---the only dumb questions are those that never get asked...
Good luck with your Sable

2002 Mercury Sable ran hot on the highway. Let it cool and made it home. Replaced thermostat and flushed radiator. After that, recieved error code 0301, 0303. Misfire on cylinder 1 and 3.Replaced coil

Before you buy any other parts, I would do a compression test on 1 and 3. When you do it, make sure both plugs are out. You could have a blown head gasket between 1 and 3, assuming you have a V6. If it is a 4 cylinder, with good compression, then I would go after plugs and wires.

I`m having boilover when I slow down or stop.

Sounds like the cooling fan or the circuit is faulty. When you are traveling at highway speeds, it runs fine? But around town it gets hot? If that is correct, it is probably the cooling fan or circuit. Could be a switch or fan motor faulty.

Air conditioning doesn't work. only blows out hot air

Check and see if the clutch on the front of your compressor engages. If not it could have a leak and not have any freon in it. If it has freon then you have an electrical malfunction on the ac system.

AC blows hot air but AC compressor works

if the compressor works and your freon is charged it may be the blower flapper door....disconnect battery for 10 minutes and then re-connect to reset the electronics that control the flapper

1999 Sable quits shifting when it gets hot

How do you know it's getting hot ? What is the Temp gauge showing ? Do the cooling fans work ? Have it checked for trouble codes an scan data checked .
It was however the correct thing to do in changing the fluid and filter - that's the first suspect. No no it wasn't , the correct thing would be to take it to a qualified repair shop . Hooking up a professional type scan tool an viewing data , inputs to transmission control module , ECM/PCM - engine computer etc. The control module controls shift solenoids -which shift the transmission . You could have 1-2 shift solenoid shorting when getting hot . View scan data is the only way to see this problem .

The heater is located in the air ducting plenum box, to access this you must remove the instrument cluster, the radio and the heater controls, then unbolt the entire dash and remove it. This is a huge job, around 10 hours.
