Not charging 1999 F250 - same issue, not charging. Alternator with internal regulator (tested on and off truck) is good, battery is good, no fuses blown. Any suggestions on what else could be the problem?
1999 Ford F250 Light Duty Super Cab. Battery is not charging. New battery new alternator (even though the old one tested ok). There's an orange wire coming from the internal voltage regulator. This wire has continuity from the regulator to the fuse box under the hood. The fuse is good. There is no continuity between the fuse box and the battery. Bypassing this wire with a jumper directly to the battery makes everything work. Alternator starts working, battery starts charging, warning light turns off. My mechanic want $200 to track down the fault in the wire. Does anyone know if this wire can be bypassed safely without having to trace it all around the engine compartment looking for the break?1999 Ford F250 Light Duty Super Cab. Battery is not charging. I'M having the same problem, But to add to it my battery light doesnt come on anymore either. when you turn the key to the on position ,Could this be one of the problems ??I'M having the same problem, But to add to it my battery light doesnt come on anymore either. when you turn the key to the on position ,Could this be one of the problems ??
only diffarance i have is its a f260 6 cylinder 1988 and the only thing i have not replaced is the altenaor wiring harnes including fusable link
the car starts with a new battary but continues to give a 12 volt reading at the battary

Possibly a fusible link somewhere in the circuit has burned through and disconnected the circuit.A wiring diagram would be needed to look for the location of any fusible links Ohms check the wires involved in the alternator charging circuit to verify continuity.

How old is the battery? In general, vehicle batteries are considered 'old' after 5 years especially on bigger engines.
Using a volt meter or a multimeter set to Volts try this. With the engine off and the Keys out test the voltage directly on the battery. You should get a reading somewhere around 12.6 to 13.2 volts. Start the engine and retest the battery voltage. If the alternator is working correctly the reading should rise to somewhere around 13.6 to 14.2 volts.
Hi Charles
I haven't seen an Alternator with a Fuse.
They Generate 35-55 or more Amps and are usually connected directly to the Battery Positive. Check at Alt. Main Terminal with MultiMeter. Check for Good Ground.
The small wire on the back of the alternator often comes from Ignition Key + to control the charge rate.
The Modern Alt. also has an internal Regulator Circuit to control charge rate.
If trying to save money.... Alternators can be split open on the Bench and repaired. Just put a mark across joint before opening.
Use a brush hook (make one) to hold brushes back while re assembling.
Items to watch for:
Brushes Worn Out - no juice to Rotor to excite (generate)
Diodes Blown - (Multimeter Test on Diode Function for shorts / open. Simple Unsolder, Press out & replace
Regulator Blown - Buy replacement
Stator Coils Corroded or Shorted/Open or bad solder joints.
the alternator is not charging
problems include incorrect alternator ( internal voltage regulated as against external voltage regulated )
blown rectifier plate ( charing with ac current instead of DC)
drive belt tension
best have it checked by an accredited auto electrician
check that the new alternator has the right type of regulator for it . If you have an internal regulated alternator on a car that has an external regulator then it will not charge . Both look the same but it may have int -reg on the housing some where.
It is not charging the battery because of several problems ---1 when connecting up the wires to the alternator was there a spark at the connection ---2 is the heavy wire on the alternator insulated from the body of the alternator--- is there a fuse in the charge circuit that is blown---4 is the light wires pushed fully home in the connection--- have you the correct alternator for the car ( internal or external voltage regulator)---5 is the drive belt in good condition and tight- If everything checks out then take it to an accredited auto electrician to have the alternator tested properly as new alternators ( out of the box new) can be faulty.
that year 1986 alternator voltage regulator either external or internal follow alternator battery feed wire if you see battery feed wire going to black box mounted on fire wall you have external voltage regulator.if voltage regulator okay problem could be alternator fuse or fuse link could be faulty battery cables if cables over 20 years old but make sure alternator drive belt tension correct.
no all cars are internal now make sure the ALT fuse in the relay center is not blown ive seen this happen someone puts an alternator in and it wont charge because fuse is blown
Does the battery charge even after it drains. Even though it's a new alternator, it could still be bad. The battery could even have a dead cell because it's draining while you're driving. Sounds mainly like the alternator output isn't enough. Internal voltage regulator inside the alternator is usually a big problem, it can't be replaced, except by a new alternator or have yous rebuilt.
check for a blown fuse, sometimes if the battery cable is connected when changing an alternator it overloads the fuse, also check for power at any fusible links
It appears that the alternator is still not charging the battery.Charge the battery up,and refire the truck.Check voltage with a voltmeter, directly off the back of the alternator. Most all alternators of your year model have the voltage regulator built into the alternator. If the alternator isn't producing any voltage, then it is bad, even if it is new.I have had defective new parts before.
