Distributor wiring diagram for a 455 Buick hei to engine block



1. Connect the distributor's B+ (battery) terminal to a switched 12-volt source, such as the ignition switch.

2. Connect the distributor's tach terminal to the tachometer signal wire, if you have a tachometer.

3. Connect the distributor's ground wire to a good engine ground.

4. Connect the distributor's #1 spark plug wire to the #1 spark plug on the engine. The #1 spark plug is usually located on the driver's side front cylinder.

5. Connect the remaining spark plug wires in firing order sequence to the distributor cap terminals. The firing order for a Buick 455 engine is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

6. Install the distributor cap and rotor.

Pull a plug wire and spark plug. Put wire on plug and hold with INSULATED pliers against the block, where you can see the spark. Have a helper turn over the motor while you watch for a BLUE spark. if no blue spark but yellow or orange, then you don't have enough spark to fire. It is also possible you have a bad distributor coil, which is mounted inside the distributor. It's kind of involved to change, but possible. Let me know what you find and I'll try to help from there!!

How to replace a distributor

disconnect the cable from the negative battry terminal. position the engine with number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke this mean you can take number one spark plug out with the engine cool place your thumb over the spark hole and have some one turn the engine over and and feel the presure by your thumb when you feel pressure stop turning engine take the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing to number one spark wire in distributor cap if not you may have to turn the engine a little with your hand apply a paint mark on the edge of the distributor body directly below the rotor tip. also make a mark on the distributor base to the engine to ensure the distributor can be re-installed in exactly the same position as originally installed disconnected the coil wires from the distributor cap electrical connector, spark plug wires from the spark plugs remove the distributor hold-down bolt and pull out the distributor.

After replacing my distributor on my 89 toyota corolla it wont start

It is possible that if you replaced the distributor, you simply have the plugs in the wrong firing order. Another possibility is that you need new spark plugs, wires, plugs, distributor rotor and possibly a distributor cap. A long shot problem is the ignition coil, but since you have spark in one plug, it is unlikely.

1999 nissan altima won't start,no spark in distributor to the spark plugs..is it because of the security system? Don't have the remote for it..

I get spark comming in to the distributer but not comming out whats do i do to fix this

The distributor cap may be faulty, it could be cracked or the spark is arcing to ground, or the rotor button is faulty. Also check the spark plug leads from the distributor to the spark plugs.
If the distributor is faulty (ie cracked or there is a carbon track on the inside of the distributor cap) then replace the distributor.
If the rotor button is faulty, then replace the rotor button.

I have a Mazda astina 323 94 model it cranks but won't start doesn't seem to be any spark from the leads I have recently changed the leads , Im guessing it's the coil and distributor cap please help

1 remove the cable from the coil to the distributor.
check this agains earth, when you turn the engine over.

if spark, suspect rotor arm is not setting spark to each spark plug lead.
open distributor and clean the rotor arm with a cloth or wire wool
not sand paper as this will take off too much and cause a problem

2 check inside distributor for moisture. spray inside with WD40 or equiventy water repelent.

3 if not spark at coil open distriutor cap and with ignition on, open and close points in distributor with a screw driver and check coil again against earth again if you get sparh, problem is points not opening and closing.

4 turn over engine with distributor cover removed to see if rotor arm is moving if not then cam drive to distributor is defective. this controls points and rotor arm.

if rotor arm turning and spark at points but no spark at coil suspect Low tension wiring or coil needs replacement.

Had sparks from coil, bought new coil same problem, bought new distributor, now car will not even start

By distributor, is that the cap or the whole piece of aluminum- housing with stator assembly/ control module/shaft/rotor/cap, the whole sha-bang.
If it was the "whole" distributor & If it ran before you put the distributor in & you only had sparks then the distributor was installed wrong.
Check for spark at the end of the plug wires. If you have spark then its more likely the distributor is in wrong &/or the firing order is off.
