The cable wears out. The head just wont hold on to the ball anymore. I hvae tried different things to get it to stay on, none worked for long. Always ended up replacing the cable.

I can shift into drive but it won't engage

sounds like a broken shift cable. (the connection between the shifter and the gearbox) common symptoms are the shifter move easier than normal.and does not move to any gears (not even park or neutral).

Slips in and out of drive

if the shifter has a cable it might be stretched out.
otherwise bent rod or worn bushings could cause this problem.
at the point where the shifting mechanism bolts to the transmission
might have slipped due to loose bolt.
remote possibility is a small stone is interfering with the shifter between shift lever and trans.
last resort internal trans problem.
This should put you on the right track!!!

Cant move shifter chev venture

You could disconnect the cable at the transaxle if you need to manually shift the trans, but you would need to disassemble the steering column to move the shift lever without unlocking the key cylinder.

Has stuck in 3rd gear 3 times now Kia supposedly fixed the problem, but it has happened twice since. Help

possible worn shift fork or shifter you can take the top a part and see if the plastic ball inside is not worn but thats all its a big job to remove trans for internal repair try to remove inside cover and shifter then 4 bolts holding cover shifter to trans and pull it out you have shifter in hand now look at the trans shift forks are they worn or ok and the teflon bushing on the end of shifter is it worn or cracked

Replace left hub assembly on 2004 Chevrolet

check linkage on top of transmission and make sure it moves while engaging shift lever. You may have also left a light on while doing work on van, check all interior lights that may still be on.

2004 Chevy Venture will not shift into gear

Had neighbor look at this same problem. Turned out the shifter cable linkage near the top of transmission had popped off. They popped it back on and works but a bushing in the clip probably needs replaced. The neighbor rewched over engined top between firewall and engine and popped it back on.
Works fine but does needs a clip/bushing part and auto parts store has to get from Chevy
