1999 ford taurus transmission

My transmition will not shift out of first gear and the speedometer wont work untill I start and stop a few times and then the speedometer and the transmission start working like they should. Could this be a speed sensor starting to go out.

Your problem is the speed sensor. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor)

is located on the right side of the transaxle, near where the right side axle shaft

connects to. To access this part is pretty tricky, if you are inexperienced. There

is an aluminum foil covered shield around the wiring connector. You will need to

remove the shield to gain access. You may even have a damaged wiring

connector, that is causing the problem due to the close proximity of this part to

the catalytic converter. If you want to purchase this part from the Ford dealer,

ask the parts counter person for the "basic" part number 9E731. Hope this helps.

If the check engine light is on you should get the codes checked for free at someplace like autozone etc. This could be the torque conver clutch solenoid or the speedometer sensor that causes this.

Is speedometer connected to Tranny?

There is a vehicle speed sensor on top of the rear differential, this sensor is also for the anti-lock brakes. Sometimes you just remove it and clean it (it's magnetic) and may start working again otherwise you have to buy new. Yes, this sensor will affect the trany shifting.

1999 Ford Taurus Wagon stays in 1st gear

Most Ford Taurus wagons have a transmission that generally goes first. that's the main reason. Just something to do with the way they are built. The only advice that I could offer is either replace the tranny or just not run the a/c. Usually it's just the motor working twice as hard running the a/c and that in turn puts the computer into the phase of lower gears for the transmission. there in being the problem.
