1997 Ford Explorer I can't close my hood and I can't afford to pay for a repair. I've secured it with a twisted steel bike cord and lock. Is there a better way? Thanks.1997 Ford Explorer I can't close my hood and I can't afford to pay for a repair. I've secured it with a twisted steel bike cord and lock. Is there a better way? Thanks.

the lever for the release cable is probably rusted up. If you look down into the latch you should see the cable attached to a lever. It may help to have somebody pull the hood release to help you find it. Spray the hood latch with some penetrating lube and push the lever back with a small long screwdriver. Be careful not to dislodge the cable from the lever. Pull on the hood release and if necessary push on the lever with the screwdriver. Continue lubing, pulling and pushing until everything works on its own.
The door pin is probably pushed down in lock position take a screw driver and push it up it is were the door closes and connects to the latch its on the door side.
the hood latch is out of adjustment loosen three bolts and pry latch up retighten bolts also check cable isnt stuck in the open position spray with lube
SOUND LIKE YOUR HOOD LATCH IS STUCK IN THE RELEASE POSITION. YOU CAN DO TWO THINGS. REPLACE YOUR HOOD LATCH OR PUSH THE LATCH BACK INTO POSITION MANUALLY EVERYTIME YOU OPEN YOUR HOOD. IT'S EASY. FIRST CHECK YOUR HOOD RELEASE LEVER (DRIVER SIDE KICK PANEL)AND MAKE SURE IT'S MOVING FREELY. IF LEVER IS OK,GO TO YOUR HOOD LATCH. LOOK TO THE RIGHT OF THE LATCH (LOOK DOWN FROM THE TOP VIEW)AND YOU'LL SEE A SMALL METAL BAR WITH A SPRING PULLING DOWN ON IT(MIGHT NEED FLASH LIGHT TO SEE BAR AND SPRING). TAKE A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER AND PUSH DOWN ON THE METAL BAR WHERE SPRING CONNECT. THE BAR SURE MOVE ABOUT 1/4 INCH DOWN. CLOSE YOU HOOD AND YOU'RE DONE. YOU JUST HAVE TO PUSH THE BAR DOWN EVERYTIME YOU OPEN IT.
There is a possibility that the remote latch cable is stuck (lubrication
is gone) . With a screwdriver, NOT the fingers, try to return manually
the latch, to its open position (instead of the pull open position). If
you push it too far, it will go into locked position, and when you pull
down the trunk lid, it wont reach its normal closed position. In that
case, pull the latch back open, with the remote lever. Should you manage
to close the trunk properly, spray some WD40 or some lubricant on the
latch assembly.
