I have a diesel engine that expells white smoke for 5 to 10 miniuts after start up? The exhaust also smells rich with fuel? I bought the truck used and am trying to fix the problems! Please help.

When an engine expels black smoke it means that the piston rings are going and is consuming oil. And when the color of smoke is white the engine is consuming more fuel. Both are harmful. Black to the engine and pocket while white to the pocket. It seems that the injector need careful attention.
Cold engine does expel white smoke initially. When the temperature rises to normal working temperature the smoke stops. This is normal in your case. 5 to 10 minutes to warm up is normal for any diesel engine. But any thing more than that needs attention.

Camry smoke on startup

The key is the color and smell of the smoke.

IF coolant, the smoke is REALLY white and usually lots, and this smoke has a sweet smell. A pressure test may show some loss, and as well, often you get a little misfire that goes away.

If Oil, the color is white, but with a lot of blue, or darker...

Most of the time, after the converter warms up, it eats and converts both types of issues...

Steam, can be normal. Remember that for every gallon of fuel you burn, you actually generate 1 gallon of water. Typically evaporates or exits as steam, and is barely perceptable.

1994 Ford Mustang blowing white smoke that smells like pure gas. Gas running straight through and getting about 5 mile per gallon.

Sounds like a blown head or intake gasket. Coolant in the oil is a sure sign. Another sure sign is loss of coolant with no obvious leaks.

Coolant in the cylinders will emit white smoke, and the fuel smell is probably raw fuel passing through because it can't ignite due to the coolant.

Pull the dipstick and if the oil looks milky, then it is a blown gasket, or worst case scenario, a cracked head or block.

what does it smell like? antifreeze, burning wires, oil, no smell, here is my best guess, 1- heater core, 2- heater blower motor burning up, 3- engine oil, and 4- steam condensation, 5- a ghost.
