Noise, steering and brake...

When I first start up the car after it has been idle for several hours, I get a sort of whining/whirring noise. The brakes and steering seem a little off -they catch or are stiff, but work fine. How serious can this problem be? My dealer is not all that close, so if I can hold off a few weeks that would be great... The problem clears up after a few minutes. I am concerned because I had a similar problem with my Pontiac Grand Prix and it turned out to be a major deal - but covered under warranty.

Thanks..
PS I love the car, so I hope this can be resolved.

my car does the same thing when steering only after you start it though. after you drive for a while it doesnt seem to do it anymore. if you turn it off only for a second then start driving again it still does it then goes away

SOURCE: 1983 Cadillac Eldorado-HT4100 Engine/Brakes Problems-HELP

Sounds like the ISC ( idle speed control ) motor and TPS ( throttle position sensor ) are in need of a synchronizing adjustment. If one of the adj is off is throws off the other. UNFORTUNATELY the HT4100 had a reputation for leaking intake manifold and head gaskets, whichic also could the problem. Any service lights coming on ? As far as going UPHILL power loss, first thing I would do is replace the FUEL FILTER . road test and note any difference. Now the brakes. Regardless of the vehicles age, done properly and with properly operating equipment should stop like new. Either done incorrectly, or poor quality parts. Many factors. The car is a keeper is handled properly. Hope this helps

SOURCE: experiencing brake/rotor problems when braking,

Find another dealer, your rotors are warped. You "may" be a left foot braker.

Whining noise when turnins steering wheel &

the whining noise you are experiencing are coming from under the bonnet and you need to have the belt serviced. look for any oil leaks and correct them first. if not inspect the condition of the belt and and whether or not you can read it normally. if not it should be turned around. sounds absolutely crazy i know. it has worked for me for about 10 years. it could be just worn and excessively glazed and cracked. simple fix bloke. cheers.

Power steering, there is an audible noise while turning, is it out of fluid or a problem with the power steering hose?

I have the same problem. I hear a whining/whirring noise when parked, turning either way, and even when driving at slow speeds. The noise gets worse when turning at slow speeds :(

Same problem: a high pitch whine after extended driving

Sounds like a dry/failing bearing or power steering pump noise. You first need to try to track down where the noise is originating, and the most likely place is at the front of the engine.
I would start by listening with the hood up while parked with the engine running and the noise present, and seeing if it is coming from there. If so, the most likely cause is something connected to the belt - e.g. AC compressor clutch, tensioner, power steering pump, or generator. Can also be caused by the belt just slipping (warn out belt, tensioner not working properly).

Loud 'whirring' noise from power steering??

The filter in the Power Steering Pump Resvior is clogged. Dealer part around $28.

A constant whizzing

that whining noise is definately your power steering pump. the earlier models eg 2001-2003 just have noisy ones. so they say, if that noise become really excessive; its an early warning that its gonna fail. the newer pumps are much quiter, but i was quoted approx 1200+ CND for a new pump. I have a 2003 cooper, and the whining noise is loud. only once has the steering been really stiff, but i resolve that problem by restarting the vehicle. watch out tho, the power sttering could fail on you while your driving around a corner, and if you dont have both hands on the wheel, you'll go strait.
