1991 handa civic alternator removal

HOW, I can not get out from underneath or from above

  • hockey0865 Aug 23, 2008

further then where is timing mount???

  • dsanm03 Sep 04, 2008

I have unhooked the alternator. How do I get the alternator out from between the frame, intake manifold, drive shaft, etc. Surely you don't have to do something stupid like having to pull a driveshaft or remove the intake to just get gthe the alternator out! As much as I love my 91 civic, I hope that Honda wouldn't be that stupid. Is is possible to take off the oil filter and drop it out below?

Jack the car up, remove the left front tire and turn the wheel all the way in one direction. If you have the alternator loose, it should come right out that lovely little hole. It might take a bit of wiggling, but I've done it on my 1991 honda civic (end run 88-91) and my mom's 88 honda civic wagon.

He's right I've done it as well you can leave the tire on and it will still come out

I need to replace the alternator belt on my 1991 Mercury Capri

This is easiest to get to if you drive the car up on ramps and work from both underneath and above.
Remove the undercage protective shields to expose it.
Belt will cost about $10.

One side of front bumper cover is hanging down on my 98 handa

You should remove the bumper cover and take a look and make sure that the cover is not broken, its all plastic and the hold down arms sometimes break off and bumper will hang, also look for missing or loose fastners,

Pulling an alternator

Removing the rear-mounted alternator on early 1990s Civics and CRX can be frustrating. After removing the upper adjusting bracket bolt and the lower pivot bolt, the alternator can *almost* come out the top and almost fits behind the intake manifold.

The only easy exit path is out the left wheel well. Side access requires removing the wheel and unfastening three of the plastic retainers holding the upper end of the splash guard. But even this doesn't provide quite enough room. You need to tuck the alternator back under the intake, unbolt the lower alternator bracket (two bolts, 14mm socket) before the alternator can be removed.

The tools needed:

10mm socket -- alternator power connection, battery terminal
12mm wrench -- adjusting bracket
14mm socket -- adjusting bracket, pivot bolt, alternator bracket

Removed altanator but cant get it out.

Alternators are held in by 2 bolts, and a fan belt running thru the alternator puller.
The 1st bolts is one the one that allows you to pivot the alternator to take up the slack on the fanbelt. The fanbelt runs from a puller wheel which is spun by the engine.
The 2nd bolt is the one which allows the alternator to pivot on during the adjustment mentioned above.

Need to know the steps on how to set the timming on a 1991 hona civic

FIRST:
Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Serpentine Belt Diagram and Tensioner location for your specific 1.5L or 1.6L Engine and options (AC/No AC etc.).
It also has the directional diagrams on how to rotate the Adjustment Bolts on both the Alternator and Power Steering to loosen the belts, inorder to both remove and reinstall the belts.

http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/year/1991/make/honda/model/civic/1991_honda_civic_drive_belt_routing_diagram.htm
SECOND:
Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Timing: Belt and Mark Diagrams for your 1991 Honda Civic. Plus additional Instructional and Directional Diagrams.

I would also strongly suggest purchasing either a Haynes or Chilton Manual, available at most auto parts stores. It has specific information you will need incuding the Torque Specifications for each and every Bolt and Nut you will be removing. Cost is $20-$25 fo the manuals.

Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information or questions. Feel Free to contact me at FixYa.com!

I have a 1991 Honda civic and the car will start but it will not

Have you changed the fuel filter? If your battery has power in it it is not the alternator. If the alternator is not charging the engine will become slugish as the battery power nears zero and the light will become dimmer and dimmer until they go out.
