Could actually be your oil filter itself. Try replacing it first, leaks around the gaskets of oil filters is not uncommon and I am not sure if it is from being installed too tight or not lubricating the rubber ring on the filter, but I have had this happen before and lost a lot of oil.
You will also want to check any sensors on the back of the block if there are any.I ran into a toyota this last week that was leaking oil from the oil pressure sensor on the block, so might be worth looking into.

Engine oil leaks from the valve cover gasket are common.

  • The intake manifold plenum gasket may leak and cause increased oil consumption/burning and a spark knock during acceleration; the gasket should be replaced.
  • External oil leaks from valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets (front or rear), and the rear crankshaft (rear main) seal area are common. The rear main seal is an unlikely source. Normally, the bearing cap mating surfaces (as well as the sealing surface between the oil pan and bearing cap) are the source for the leaks.
  • Engine oil leaks at the distributor can be misdiagnosed as leaks from theintake manifold seal, oil pan gasket, or rear crankshaft (rear main) seal. A revised distributor is available if oil is found inside the distributor.
  • If the oil filter casing shows signs of distortion from excessive oil pressure, theoil pump should be replaced.
  • Often misdiagnosed as a leaking oil filter gasket, the oil filter adapter can seep from between the adapter and engine block.
  • Carbon buildup on the top of the piston is common. As the buildup increases with mileage and over time, symptoms may vary from light ticking, to ticking/hammering, to hammering/knocking noises. Fuel injector cleaner often solves the problem.

    Smoke comin from top rocker cover smell like burnin oil

    Could the smoke be coming from the exhaust manifold on the passenger side of the engine? When the valve cover starts to leak, it is common for the oil to leak down and burn on the outside of the exhaust manifold.
    Replacing a valve cover gasket is not difficult or expensive, and it is common for BMW valve cover gaskets to get brittle and shrink and start leaking every 10 years or so. My wife's 330 needed a new valve cover gasket at 6 years.

    Oil leaking from under the front of the motor. Have had both manifold gaskets changed, yet still have a leak. Now the starter is full of oil and I have to replace it

    the manifold gaskets role in an oil leak? oil under the car i would be thinking about a front or rear crankshaft seal or the oil pan, or the oil pressure sender unit. if there is oil on the sides of the engine i would look to the valve cover gaskets.

    Burnt Oil Smell

    Check carefully around the valve covers, this is the area that leaks most frequently occur, and being located next to the exhaust manifold can easily cause the burning smell. There is a very easy to replace gasket under the cover. Other possibilities, shop or you when changed or added oil spilled a bit and that has worked down to the exhaust manifold and is causing the burnt oil smell. Last possibility is that you do have a slow leak on the underside of the engine that is blowing back onto the exhaust system causing the smell.

    Smoke comes from around engine

    Probably a vavle cover gasket leak, small but enought to produce oil, in or on the surface of the motor doesnt take much to a lil smoke from aa hot engine...it could be collectiing in the canals ontop of the motor where the vlave covers sit on the head? or a head gasket problem....inspect it well after you run the car for a lil while, b4 it starts to smoke

    Leaking oil bad

    If you're certain it isn't your oil filter, then it can only be three other things. The first (and easiest) thing to check is a small diamond-shaped plate on the side of the block, under the intake manifold, towards the alternator. It has a bolt and a stud in it. Verify that both of those are tight. If they are tight, check the four bolts that secure the "push rod cover" to the side of the engine. The push rod cover runs the length of the engine and is located directly under the intake manifold. This was the culprit of my oil leak, and I imagine it will be yours also. However, if you find that those bolts are tight and no oil can be found leaking from that area, check your valve cover. The Fiero valve covers were stamped from very pliable steel and it is difficult, at best, to get them to seal correctly. Problems usually occur when people torque the bolts too tight and bend the valve cover. I recommend a product called "Indianhead" gasket shellac. Remove the valve cover and ensure all gasket surfaces are clean. Ensure the valve cover's gasket mating surface is straight - straighten with a hammer and block of wood if needed. Follow the directions on the bottle to the letter, making sure to coat your valve cover gasket surface, both sides of your gasket, and the gasket surface on the head.
