Well it could be the selector switch, but I doubt it.
Generally, the service light means something is not working that the computer controls. Solenoids and valves are a couple of possibilities.
The transfer case is shifted by solenoids commanded by the body computer based on the switch position on the dash.
You should be able to have a shop scan the body computer for trouble codes and proceed from there.
A basic code reader may not access the body computer.

4 wheel drive does not engage on a 2004 toyota tundra

I recommend taking this vehicle in for a basic transfer case inspection and switch inspection as well. this light will illuminate if the case is experiencing difficulties in shifting or engaging the 4WD system.

The malfunctioning part in my case is what ford calls the "integrated wheel end" which locs the weel hub on the four wheel drive in or out as need. Part is available from Ford and cost about $110.00. I will do this repair myself.
