You will need to get underneath the vehicle and loosen the emergency brake adjuster to relieve the tension on the cables. Bear in mind that untill you replace the broken cable and readjust the emergency brake, you will have no emergency brakes.

The emergency brake cable connector on my 2005 Buick Park Avenue, broke. I got a new connector, how do I get the two cables close enough to install the new connector?

**CAUTION** You are working underneath a vehicle with the brakes OFF. Be safe at ALL times.
Make sure the vehicle will NOT roll as you will need to raise the vehicle AND release the E-brake.
Check the basics and silly stuff. Have you released the handle inside the vehicle to the OFF position? Check the routing of the cables all the way from the rear wheels to the connector and from the pull handle to the connector. Sometimes when a cable goes slack it can get hung up on something and not be lined up correctly.
The wheel end of the cable has to work against the springs inside the rear brake drums. These are strong springs so can need a lot of force to move the cable. Is the new connector an adjustable type? Wind it out to it's longest setting.
Sometimes it is a case of pure Brute force to pull the cables together. So BE CAREFUL when you are underneath the vehicle.
Your last option is to slacken the adjusters off at the wheels and the pull lever inside the vehicle to giv you some slack.
**NOTE** If you do this DO NOT FORGET to retighten the adjusters back to their working settings.

My emergency brake release cable broke. how do I release the brake manually?

Loosen the cable adjusters located underneath the vehicle. You should be able to take the tension out of the cables so the brakes will release.

My emergency brake cable broke with the brake engaged. how do i disengage it so i can get to a garage?

If the emergency brake cable broke, then the brake should disengage by itself, unless there is rust in the braking system preventing it from doing so.

An engaged brake needs tension on the cable to continue to hold the vehicle still.

You could have it towed by a flat bed that slowly draws the car up onto its flat bed, even if the brakes or park was engaged. Allow the tow truck operator to worry about this problem.

Good luck on getting your vehicle to the garage.

Emergency break cable broke on 2004 silverado

I had the same problem on my 2003. Open the driver door all the way. Get on your knees just outside the door. Follow the plastic tub that holds the parking brake release cable inside the truck. Start from the release lever and follow to the end of the tube. There will be a metal lever that the cable was attached to before it broke. You have to pull that lever with your hand to release the parking brake. Very Important!!!...Hold the parking brake activation pedal with your other hand when you release the brake. Let the pedal out slowly when you pull the metal release lever. The pedal will come back very fast and you could injure yourself if you are not careful. Good luck!

2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 brake release cable broke and won't release the emergency brake. I checked the brake release handle and cable and discovered a small nut like metal piece on the floor below...

Same thing happened to me on my 2000 silverado July 3, 2009.
There is a release next to the parking brake pedal. You have to reach way under the dash but it has worked for me for the last month. I have the part to fix it but haven't had the time.

Something broke when I applied the emergency brake and now the brake is locked in the ON position and stuck in my driveway

Sounds like the release cable broke. Does it have a lever near the driver's side dash to release? Check the bottom of the vehicle for a length of steel cable laying on the ground. To release, try grabbing the cable with a pair of vice grips and pull toward the front of the vehicle, this should engage the release to let the parking brake off.

Parking or emergency Brake problem

Check the hardware for the drum emergency brake inside the the rear disc brakes, these pads are for your emergency brake, there should be an adjustment bolt that just sits between the two pads. Also, check the cables running to this set of pads to make sure they were connected properly. After you have checked the drum emergency brake, follow the cables in the undercarriage and look for the point at which they combine to another single cable, this is the point where the actual cable pressure adjustment is located.
