I have a problem filling my mazda 2 TS reg 09 with petrol. The pump keeps cutting out as if the tank is full and it isn't.It's still under warranty, spoke to the dealer last year and he said there is nothing wrong with it. Having driven for nearly fifty years, I am aware how to fill a car with petrol!! Any ideas?

This sounds like the breather pipe is blocked, there ought to be a small pipe coming from the top of the tank that allows air to escape when you put in fuel, if this becomes blocked then you are fighting tank pressure.
Another thing to try is to turn the pump handle through a different angle, sometimes they fill better from a different angle, again, this is due to the air pressure changes as you pump in fuel.

SOURCE: Can't fill the gas tank on 98 Toyota Camry

I have a 2000 camry that I just fixed today. there is a vent tube and valve on the carbon canister that is located just behind the gas tank and above the cross member. this vent tube will get plugged up by ( of all things ) spiders, dirt daubers, and I even had a mouse pack the tube with dog food. Just remove the tube and the valve from the canister and clean them out. You will now be able to fill your gas tank again.

SOURCE: My 04 Avalanche will not let me fill the gas tank

Is there a check engine light on? The first thing I would do is look at the vent solenoid. GM has had issues with these either sticking closed or the filter getting plugged.

Find the charcoal canister. It will be mounted near the fuel tank. There should be a large hose attached to it. On the other end of that is is the vent solenoid. Remove it and see if you can fill the tank.

If you can than see if you can blow through the vent solenoid. With it unplugged you should be able to blow through it easily. If you can't than it is broken and needs to be replaced.

I beleive GM has updated the part and routing for that year. You can check with the dealer to see if that is the case.

SOURCE: Problems fillng the gas tank 2002 Sonata

i just went through that problem

Evap canister / close solenoid and air filter $211- 230.00 in parts

$675- $71.00 at dealships for this small 30 minute task

If no check engine light Evap canister and air filter - fixxes problem 100 %
note:you may be able to get by just replacing air filter- works
rarely

if have check engine- close solenoid and purge solenoid may need replace- you local autozone- like autozone will pull check codes for free

the how to:

Jack car up in rear - behind right rear tire - canister -canister close solenoid & air filter are located in a plastic box with metal strap and one bolt.

Unscrew bolt everything drops down the EVAP CANISTER is held to plastic box by wirer tie . Remove wire tie and solenoid connection.
There is a small metal wire clip the holds the solenoid electrical connection together with a flat screw driver pry up the wire clip , off is okay too , ....it will go back on.

Once you have done all that you have full access there are i believe from memory 3 rubber hoses with clips ......Mark hose connects very important mark the hoses way the going on evap canister with color tape .

Next, remove whole assembly- the solenoid and air filter will come with the evap canister.

Now that have the whole assembly move to your work bench
look to see how the soleniod hook up to the canister and the air filter - now, disconnect the hose to black solenoid and remove the air filter which hook to solenoid and solenoid at same to ......

Next seperate the the solenoid and air filter- you should be air to put your mouth on solenoid and blew air in one hole and out the other- this solenoid is noramlly open- if air dosen't go threw is stuck closed and must be replaced.

same with air filter- this air filter are know for get plugged and should be replaced every 30,000 miles.

Also note: over fill you gas tank , at fill up - can cause the Evap to get liquid gas inside which cause the chorcoal in the filter to swell up and plyug the system up.------ you should when fill up stop pump gas after the auto pump click off on normal work tank and not try to top off you tank.

note: check with your deal for exact wieghts
weigh the evap canister - six pound - replace it- new one is about 4-4.5 pounds - it is just best to replace .The evap holds gas fumes then send to engine so that dosn't vent to

All parts are dealships only -

This is easy fix and normal, for gas fill problems

canister Evap 161.00
canister close solenoid 43.00 may or may not be used
air filter 7.00

not used in this fix- check engine fix use these parts
sensor price ?
purge valve 39.00
canister close solenoid 43.00

SOURCE: Gas Gauge not reading correctly

The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.

SOURCE: 2004 hyundai accent. trouble filling gas tank

I have a 2005 Hyundai Accent, It is not possible to fill the tank if you are letting the petrol pump run at full speed.Trying to fill up quickly it will only build up pressure and cut off. Next time you fill up just pull the petrol pump handle half way, it will take longer to fill but you wont get the blow back. Modern petrol pumps are getting quicker all the time.Hope this helps you.

Gas tank will not fill up on 2001 ford expedition

Gas as in gasoline or gas as in LPG gas? If its petrol, the fuel sender may be out of adjustment. (Usually means a new sender) If its LPG, the fuel stations are set to automatically shut off at 80% full. The gas tank will never actually be full to the brim but the gauge should be showing full if the gas nozzle keeps shutting off. Have a look on the LPG tank itself, they have a little gauge on them which shows how full it is. I have 2 tanks on my car , when "full" or when the pump shuts down, the tank gauges show just under full but the gauge on the cars dash shows full (2005 BA Ford)

1989 range rover not pumping petrol 3,9 runs on gas but will not pump petrol

Hi there, did you run the petrol low or out, the fuel pump will keep pumping while the key is on and if your running on gas them it's still running, I would say the fuel pump has failed due to no lubrication from fuel, be sure to keep your petrol tank at least at 1/4 of tank full

The petrol light stays on and gauge wont move after fuel has been put in. Why?

There is a floater sensor on the fuel pump and when they go bad the sensor does not send a signal of the tank being full. That little arm on the fuel pump moves up and down with the level fill of the fuel tank. The fix is a new pump.

Ford fiesta 1.4 ZTECH SI P Reg. Engine almost cuts out on only left-hand corners. At the time the fuel was on red but is now on half-fule and it's still doing it but ok on right-hand bends and straights.

Hmmmm Sounds like your fuel pump as sucked up all the **** and residue out of your petrol tank, Try;

1) Using redex
2) Buying a new fuel pump
3) Buying a new petrol tank
4) Buy a new car?!

Kidding about the last one :P let me know how you get on.

Mazda 2 2005 model Recently loaned to a friend. Returned with a full fuel tank however an overpowering fuel smell in the interior of the car. Is it feasible that over filling the tank could do this? ...

if the tank was overfilled and parked in the sun the fuel will expand and flood the charcoal box, if there is no other petrol leak, the box has to be replaced.
