Car whines when in reverse - 1996 Honda Civic

Take It To A Transmission Shop And Have The Codes Read That Should Be Your Answer!! if you can get it there without reverse !! It Could Be Many Issues!! (More Info) Would Be Great !! (Like) is The Fluid Burnt Has It Been Changed? The Whining is a description of Fluid Pressure possible torque converter issues is the Radiator Clogged?? Many Questions !!!

Sounds like you have a transmission pump issue,you will need to take it to a tranny shop to diagnose if that is the problem if in drive it does not whine.

if it's also whining in reverse, it might be a problem with the converter

it does sound like the transmission has packed it in. you might be able to find a decent used one via a wrecking yard and get a local mechanic to install it.
try to find one out of a car with under 100K miles on it.

a reverse whine is usually normal because of how the gears mesh in transmission in relation to the machining grooves. is this new for this car?

the whining noise is the torque converter and trans oil pump,this needs replacement,reverse is probably clutch pack or a gear set

Sounds like your final drive pin in your differential broke causing the main spider pin to tear through the case.Catastropic damage.Check for severe fluid leak under car.If no signs of leaks,check dipstick for greyish blk colored fluid.If this is the case you will need to replace transaxle & flush trans cooler.hope this helps

The high pitched whine in reverse sounds normal for a honda. Ever honda I have had makes a similar noise while in reverse. The spinning, scraping noise in drive is not normal. You might want to see a mechanic about that.

some vehicles whine in reverse. My 1994 nissan did but was never an issue

i had a nissan pickup that would whine in all gears except 4th...it started out with 1st then reverse then went to the rest...solution was new transmission...or rebuild cause the syncronizers or the gears them selves are being chewed up...the new transmission was cheaper then a rebuild. or take it to somewhere that will do free diag on the transmission.
