If the security light is on, then it can only be one thing. The security system is failing and immobilizing your car. Go to this link and read up on the problem. The security light is a dead give away that the security is messed up. If you have no little black chip in the shaft of your key, then this means you must have a passlock that runs on the transponder. You need the PERMANENT fix from this site. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/
OK BUT I DONT HAVE THAT KIND OF KEY I JUST HAVE A PLAIN SILVER KEY WITH NOTHING IN IT I HAVE A SL JUST A PLAIN JANE BUT I SHUT IT OFF AND NOW THE CHECK ENGINE, TEMP, OIL AND SECURITY LIGHTS COME ON WHEN I TURN THE KEY ON BUT THEY WON'T GO OFF BECAUSE THE CAR WON'T START I CAN JUMP THE STARTER AND IT STARTS RIGHT UP BUT WILL NOT START FROM THE KEY.
Does your key have a plastic top? It mighty have the transponder hidden in the top. See the pics on the site. Or somebody has done a partial bypass and cut a chipless key. This IS THE PROBLEM THO. I'm sure of it. If it days security. Its a guarantee. You can always return that bypass module off out doesn't work. I've done dozens of these bypasses. They work great.
Sorry for spelling. I'm doing this from my phone. Also, the fact that you can jump they starter proves that the starter is immobilized from the ignition due to the security. If the light is solid and not flashing, it means the TDM is bad. This is the security computer. This is where that bypass module saves you about 500 bucks
NO THE KEY HAS NOTHING ON IT I TOOK THE RUBBER OFF IT AND IT IS JUST A METAL KEY, IT SAYS GM THE OTHER ONE DOES NOT HAVE NOTHING EITHER BUT IT HAS A NUMBER ON IT14R2 DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS I GUESS I NEED TO TAKE IT TO A SHOP I DON'T THINK I CAN DO ALL THAT WITHOUT MESSING SOMETHING UP BUT THANKS SO MUCH FOR HELPING
Let me run something by you someone on another site told me that whoever owned the car before me probably disarmed the security system and when I had OReillys put the machine on it and reset the codes because the check engine light stayed on all the time and the oil light, OReillys told me they were old codes and they reset them then the car died. Could it be he reset them to manafactures codes and now the car thinks I am stealing it? and if so what do I do now if they already bypassed it and the codes were reset? Am I just screwed? desprate for a fix
First, there are 3 parts in this system. The chip key, the ignition that reads it. and the TDM. (theft deterrent module/basically a computer) It is possible and quite common to bypass the key and ignition part of this system if the secuirty light is blinking. Problem is that leaves the TDM in the car still, and actively working. If the light is solid, its the TDM that has failed. Over 500 bucks for a new TDM plus labor. 190 if you wanted to bypass it. Those bypasses are a miracle for old GM's. and most people can install them all by themselves in a few hours.
IS THERE ANYWAY FOR ME TO TELL IF SOMEONE HAS BYPASSED IT BEFORE ME? I ASSUME THEY DID SINCE MY KEY IS JUST A METAL KEY .. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR I FEEL SO STUPID..
The only way to tell would be to rip into the steering column and look at the ignition/lock cylinder. It would have the 2 orange wires cut and a resister would be placed between them, connecting them. I just looked up your vehicle, and it DOES have the passlock 1 system. so the security is most likely the problem. There should have been a chip on the key. Id say that somebody did an ignition bypass, and now your TDM has failed.
CAN I GET A NEW KEY WITH THE CHIP IN IT? FROM A DEALER MAYBE?
Well if the wires are bypassed and the resister put in between them. The chip has now become irrelevent. The resister is doing the key chip's job. The problem would be in the TDM not giving the correct signal to the starter to allow it to start. Thats the beauty of that bypass module. It simulates the correct signal which then allows the starter to start like normal and eliminating every aspect of that security system permanently
I know it seems like alot, but they do come with directions and a moneyback gaurentee. I think shipping too. I did my own. (and dozens since) ive also heard of people buying the bypass and having a local mechanic install it. That is always an option. Will still be cheaper than the TDM or a new car.
