There is no repair manual published for the 1996 tercel, not from chilton, not from haynes.
the 1994 tercel and the 1996 corolla are both covered in haynes manuals, that's the closest we can get. both have some of the same systems, gotta pick and choose.
there is an expensive professional repair manual, published by toyota, i think, that's what mechanics buy for shops. it costs hundreds, and is not easy to buy.
You can purchase one at either Auto Zone, O'Reilly or Pepboys, almost all autoparts houses have them or can get them for you. They usually run about 18.00
I checked the Auto Zone Online parts look-up and you are right there isn't a Manual for the 1996 model Tercel, but there is one for the 1995 model. the knock sensor is located on the left front side of the engine,the side closest to the firewall,should be screwed into the engine block Hope this helps,please rate my fix Thanks Ray. need more help get back to me
For a car this old It's almost certainly the water pump. You may also look at the rubber waterhoses also since they do not last forever either. Do not drive without fluid in the radiator - it will warp the engine header and the engine can seize up.
Replace the timing belt
Inspect the water pump for any evidence of seepage at the impeller shaft seal
Change the oil & filter
Flush the auto transmission (if it has one)
Replace the spark plugs
Replace the spark plug wires if they are older than 5 years old
Replace the air filter
Flush the cooling system, and new coolant
This pretty much covers it, some of the above items may have already been done.

1995 to 1997 tercel? no repair manual sold. noy by chilton or haynes. there's supposed to be a detailed manual by toyota, sold only to repair shops, hard to get and it costs hundreds. definitely not any download version i've ever heard of.
1996 was before corporations were really into downloadable anything.
