SOURCE: 5 error cods on my 2002 Jetta GLS 1.8 Turbo Engine

P0420= Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1
P0300=Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301=Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0172=System Too Rich Bank 1
P2181=Cooling System Performance
you need to write these down,have someone clear the codes in the car,then go for short ride and recheck which if any code reappears.it's like domino's affect,one sensor can start a chain affect with the others.

Sounds like your turbo-charger. Wouldn't be surprised if your turbo impeller is broken in two. Advise checking intake for blockage while you're at it.

VW Jetta starts, then turns off immediately

try checking the throttle position sensor or the idle control valve both can keep it from running.

Lack o fpower

Any check engine lights? If not could still be just a Mass Air flow running on minimum and won't make the Check engine come on or something more major like the wastegate valve on the turbo, and or the vacuum or or the vanes in the turbo seizing.
Any odd noises like air flowing could be a disconnected turbo pipe also.
You can try unplugging the mass air flow sensor and try it like that. If it runs better (not perfect) it could be just that. If it does let me know and I'll tell you what to do.
