Where is the transmission filter?

Hi Peter, If your Camry has an automatic transmission, for normal driving the auto fluid should be changed every 40,000km, there should be a drain plug on the transmission pan that takes a 10mm hex drive or 17mm socket to undo. You have two choices after driving the car onto ramps or jacking up and supporting on jack stands so you can safely get under the car. 1 - You can loosen and remove the transmission drain plug to let the auto fluid drain out into a container (careful not to lose the sealing washer) refit and tighten the drain plug and washer again. Remove the auto transmission fluid level dip stick, using a suitable funnel pour about 2.5 litres of suitable new auto trans fluid back into the transmission via the dipstick tube (I believe they take dexron 2 of 3 type fluid). Start the car and move it onto a level surface. With the engine running, handbrake on and brake pedal applied, shift the transmission from park through every gear selection slowly into 1st gear, then back to park. Leave engine running. Wipe the dip stick & insert it back into the dip stick tube fully, remove and check where the fluid level mark is on the end of the dipstick. If the fluid level indicates low or does not show at all, add 100ml of additional fluid and recheck the level till the fluid reaches the full mark on the dipstick. 2 - The second option is everything in the first option but includes replacement of the transmission filter and pan gasket. I would only do this if the car had travelled high km or the pan gasket was leaking. At the point where you've drained the old fluid into a container and refitted the drain plug and washer, remove all the transmission pan bolts and the transmission pan. If you have the time to let the fluid drain overnight prior to removing the pan it's a good idea because once the pan is removed, fluid will continue to drip from the transmission. You'll need to remove the old pan gasket, some may be stuck to the pan and or transmission, a razor blade type gasket scraper can be good for this but be careful not to scratch either surface when cleaning off the old gasket. Remove the bolts/nuts that hold the transmission filter onto the bottom of the transmission. Careful caus more fluid may drain out of the transmission or filter once removed. Fit the new filter and filter tube gasket & bolts/nuts, careful not to over tighten. Fit new pan gasket, pan and bolts. Continue with fluid filling procedure from option 1. I would suggest you only use option one and remember to double check the drain plug is tight. Also, remember to dispose of the old fluid correctly. Cheers

transmission filter in the bottom of transmission bolted to valve body.you need a large drain pan.place drain plug under transmission oil pan.remove transmission oil pan drain plug.let all transmission fluid drain out then screw back drain plug in oil pan.then you need to remove transmission oil pan then remove filter and replace pan gasket also.make sure you have right amount transmission fluid on hand.buy extra because if you short of fluid you cant drive car if fluid level too low.make sure you get the right amount fluid.torque pan bolts to 96 inch pounds.

Transmission fluid is drained by removing the bottom pan off the transmission. There is no drain plug. If unobstructed by a crossmember,support or the exhaust, you can do this your self. Obtain a filter and gasket set, 1 can of brake cleaner, and 1 gallon of recommended transmission fluid from local parts store. Remove negative battery cable. Raise and support front of vehicle using jack stands or ramps. Set parking brake.

Loosen bolts 3/4 way around pan and put a catch pan beneath trans. pan. Slowly loosen remaining bolts until fluid begins to drain from 1 corner, loosen as it drains until you can remove pan. (its messy no matter how careful you are) Clean pan out well using brake cleaner. Clean outer rim/gasket surface of pan and mating surface of transmission thouroughly as to leave no evidence of old gasket or sealant down to shiny metal. You can use a bit of fine sandpaper or steel wool to help. Do not oversand. Clean all surfaces completely finishing with a wipe off using brake cleaner, make sure pan and trans. mating surfaces are dry and free of fluid. Install new filter in transmission, then gasket and pan as advised by instructions in filter/gasket kit. Re-fill transmission fluid through dipstick hole marked TRANS or TRANS FLUID in engine compartment using a funnel in dipstick tube. Put in about 2 quarts, then start engine in park on level surface. Put in SMALL amounts of fluid , re-checking level continuously until proper level is reached. Drive car 10-20 miles and re-check fluid level again, add accordingly. DO NOT overfill transmission, as seal damage will result. If you overfill, drain small amount off by loosening pan bolts slightly and jacking up one side of vehicle to make gravity force some out. Hi there, hope these few steps help:

• Raise the car with a jack and support the vehicle with jack stands sufficiently rated to safely support the weight of the vehicle.
• Place a large drip pan under the transmission.
• Remove the transmission fluid drain bolt with a wrench. The drain bolt is located at the bottom of the transmission facing the pan. The pan is the large flat plate that covers the very bottom of the transmission.
• Drain the transmission fluid into the drip pan.
• Reinstall the transmission fluid drain bolt with the same wrench used to remove the bolt.
• Lower the vehicle to the ground after removing the jack stands.
• Open the hood and remove the transmission dipstick from the filler tube by pulling the dipstick. The end of the dipstick will be curved into a circle to allow a finger to slide into the circle to withdraw the dipstick.
• Place a funnel into the dipstick tube and fill the transmission with new fluid by pouring the fluid into the dipstick tube.
• Remove the funnel and check the fluid level with the dipstick until the fluid reaches the "Full" mark on the tip of the dipstick.
• Start and allow the engine to run for a few minutes.
• Move the transmission gear selector through all of the gears while depressing the brake pedal.
• Turn the engine off and check the fluid level on the dipstick. Add transmission fluid if necessary.

Tranny filters are located in the transmission pan.

the transmission filter is under the car held on by usually 10 to 20 bolts on the bottom of the transmission, this is your transmission pan similar to your engine oil pan but with no drain plug so its kinda messy your first time doing it, and not sure what cover on the engine your talking about if possible a better description would be better to go by

No drain plug, the filter is inside trans. Remove trans oil pan (it will be full of tran fluid so loosen bolts on one end and work your way to other end) May have to take bolts out of a cross member and slid it back to get to all the pan bolts. The filter is flat and you'll see it once the pan is dropped. Pull straight down to remove. Clean out sludge and old fluid from pan and scrape old gasket off.
Push new filter into place. Its a good idea to use gasket sealer to help keep it from leaking and to help hold gasket in place so bolt holes stay lined up while bolting up pan. Tighten all bolts evenly. Then refill tran with the fluid your service manual list. Operate your truck in all gears (shifting back and forth) and recheck trans fluid level. Its not a hard job to change filter and fluid. If you can change your own motor oil and have a rachet and sockets then you couldnt have any problems. Just get your filter and trans fluid from your local auto parts store like Autozone or Advance Auto Parts.

most automatic transmissions & transaxles are drained by removing the bottom pan,allowing access to the filter as well.normal service life of transmission oil is 100K miles on most cars.fill transmission through dipstick tube,do not over fill.

should be large flat metal piece with 2 bolt facing down.

try asking to see one at the auto parts store

the transmission filter on my 01 optima looks like an oil filter right next to the battery
