How do i check allowable movement in rear drive shaft differential on a 2005 chevy equinox

There is no "cheking"to be done other than what you have done already. The movement,ANY movement, only means the universal joint is shot and needs replaced.I'm sure you've noticed a steady vibration. It's coming from bad U-joint.Replace it.

700r4 transmisson vibration in 1st and 2nd gears

this is probably a bad u-joint(s) crawl under the truck engine off and in park and on a flat spot, twist the drive shaft if it clunks at all or has some up down or left right slop the joints are shot and will need replacing. And yes the u-joints will cause a drive line vibration that seems like a transmission issue it goes away with speed as the shaft will spin fast enough the vibration will become only a hum.

I have a bad vibration between 35 mph and 70 mph however if I take my foot off the gas the vibration goes away - have changed fuel pump, filters and engine mounts and now the esp light comes on and goes...

vibrations can come from all manner of things, wheel imbalance thrown a weight or flat spot on tyre or damaged wall, suspension mounts, engine+gearbox mounts, anti roll bar mounts, wishbones lower mounts, drop links, steering rack and idlers, there can be others that you would not think can do this and these are clutch thrust bearing or plate spring. rear wheel drive prop shaft mounts, exhaust and mounts, automatics can be the torque converter out of balance. also can be worn bearings on the wheels. you would need to find were the location of the vibration starts and pin down its area this can help with another pair of ears in the vehicle.

u need to check rear end with the drive shaft removed vibration goes away would lead me to believe you have bad bearings in the rear end more than likely the pinion bearing
pull cover off (while fluid draining check to see if there a lot of metal in oil )
if you do see metal in fluid or laying in rear end you need rear end rebuilt or replaced
i wouldn't recommend doing the rebuild your self because with out the special tools and knowleage u can make matters worse

2005 gmc seirra vibration around 50 mph

It sounds like a bad U-joint to me. The only way to properly check u-joints is by removing the driveshaft. The joint should move freely, any binding will cause the vibration.

THIS MAY SOUND STRANGE BUT DO YOU FEEL ANY VIBRATION IN THE SEAT WHEN YOU HEAR THE HUMMING IF SO I WOULD SUSPECT THE U/JOINTS IN YOUR DRIVE SHAFT ARE GOING BAD
