My 2005 Altima gear shift gets stuck in Drive and I can't shift to Reverse or Park. It happens only occassionally. If I sit there and fiddle with it for a few minutes it eventually shifts, but I know at some point it may stick permanently. Nissan dealership hasn't been able to find the problem

In order for the shift lock solenoid to release a stop lamp signal must be received. the 2 most common causes of an intermittent inop. shift lock solenoid would be (1) intermittently the stop lamps do not work (stop lamp switch, etc.) or (2) intermittently the shift lock solenoid receives power but does not operate (bad solenoid). There are certainly other possible causes but I'd begin by confirming the stop lamps turn on when the shift lock does not release. Hope this helps

SOURCE: Wont shift out of park unless I stick a screw driver in a small hole above gear shifter.

You must remove the console yes, and you need to replace the shift lock solenoid.

SOURCE: Gear Shift gets stuck on Maxima 2001

The gear shift electrical relay or module inside it is not reading the signal to release. You need to have the electronic relay or module repaired or the gear shift assembly replaced.

SOURCE: 2006 Altima doesn't shift into reverse

The problem that I could see is the transmission/shift solenoid. The solenoid thing is located inside the transmission. The repair should run $200-$250 or there abouts. If you don't fix it quickly though, you will wreck the transmission and you don't want to know how much that costs!

You may also contact the manufacturer for second opinion.

Hope this helps and have a great evening!

2006 Altima won't shift into reverse or park

Is there any warning lights or malfunction besides this?? There are three main parts that may cause this: Park/Neutral safety switch(located on the transmission), Brake pedal switch(located at the brake pedal), Shift lock solenoid(located below the shifter). P/N safety switch prevents the shifter from shifting out of (P) or shifting into (R/P) while vehicle is in motion. Brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the shifter lock to shift out of park. Shift lock, locks the shifter as describe above and is located at the shifter base. I recommend inspection/replacement of the shift lock solenoid and P/N safety switch as its an intermitted problem. Hopefully this helps

My gear shift is stuck and will not move from park to reverse. I had backed out the car and turned it off. when I went to move the car, my gear shift will not move out of the park position.

do the brake lights work? the system has a lock out that keeps you from moving out of park unless the brake circuit is activated, hence no brake lights no park lock out release, if the brk lights do work u most have a stuck or defective park lock out solenoid.

2006 Nissan X Trail Gear Shift Stuck in Park. No warning lights are on, car starts fine, gear shift stuck in park and will not move unless I manually do it by depressing the shift lock with a key or screw...

This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr
