WILL A 95 PONT GA 3.1 ENGINE AND TRANS FIT IN A 97 CHEV LUMINA CAR 3.1?

I have a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina with the 3.8L engine. In 2009 I also smelled fuel when I drove my car. My leak was located at the fuel rail output connector. Chev house said I had to replace the entire fuel line all the way back to the tank. Say what? I easily fixed the problem by installing a NAPA #7304922 3/8" Nylon Fuel Line Retainer (repair kit - $25).

Unfortunately it's a (relatively) one year only engine (without major component changes). However, these will fit without those changes:

'97, '98, '99 Buick Century,

'98, '99 Lumina (car),

'98, '99 Grand Prix,

'99, Monte Carlo.

This is assuming that you have an (8th digit) "M" VIN. Off the top of my head.

It is behind the side pan. driver's side of course. 3 speed trans I presume?

An engine from another Corolla up to 1997 will fit. There are 2 engines though. 4A-fe (1.6L) or a 7A-fe (1.8L) They look similar but run different Engine managment computers. The 4A-fe uses a 3spd auto trans and the 7A-fe uses a 4spd auto trans. Also some of the wiring may be different.

depends on the engines,call a scrap yard and ask what the interchanges are,or possibly an auto parts store

When it stops, does it have spark? (crank sensor)

It might physically appear to look the same . but the valve body within thw transmission will contain differences

Up to 96 will work,97 up they changed the electronics.

If there is a delay(like 2-3 secs) when you shift from neutral to drive...then down to reverse...most likely the transmission is screwed,or on its way out.
Is the Fluid level correct?,and is the fluid red or dark and smelly ?.

Dark and smelly IS NOT A GOOD SIGN.--means the fluid has been overheating ...

My brother did this same swap a couple years ago. He had to get the whole harness from the 96; including the computer to make it run right.
