Hi there,

The DOT3 reservoir is for brake master cylinder fluid - DO NOT put anything other than brake fluid in there.

Whilst engine is COLD

As you view your radiator tank, see if you can locate a small tube running from the radiator cap, to a separate reservoir - this is your coolant reservoir. If there is no reservoir on your model, then you can remove the radiator cap (ONLY DO THIS WHEN ENGINE IS COLD) and apply the coolant mixture directly into your radiator tank from this opening.

Ideal coolant mixture is 50% coolant & 50% distilled (pre-boiled) water.

Cheers,

Temperture gage starting to fluxuate while driving.

This can be caused by an insufficient coolant (aka antifreeze) level. Look at the coolant level in the reservoir under the hood. There should be two marks on the bottle "warm" or "hot" and "cool" or "cold". If the engine has been running for a while as in the case when the car has been driven few miles, the coolant level should be up to the "warm" or "hot" line on the bottle. If the car has been parked without the engine running for a couple of hours or more, the coolant level should be at the "cool" or "cold" line on the bottle.

Never remove the radiator cap when hot or if the engine has only been been stopped for less than 2 or 3 hours.

If the hot coolant is at a level that is below the warm or hot line, you should add more of the coolant / water mixture only to the reservoir - not to the radiator. If you are only able to check the coolant level when it is hot - you will have to repeat this procedure until the coolant level of the reservoir is maintained. Checking the hot coolant level can only be done when it has been allowed to cool between hot checks. The cooling period is the only time when coolant is drawn from the reservoir back into the radiator.

If the cold coolant is at a level below the cool or cold line of the reservoir you should add more of the coolant / water mixture to the reservoir and to the radiator, too. Fill the radiator to the top of the neck where the tube from the reservoir connects to it.

If you're still having widely fluctuating temperatures while driving at normal operating speeds, there may be a problem with the water pump, thermostat or other portion of the cooling system.

I hope this helps & good luck!

I am getting message "Coolant low". My sister

Welcome to Fixya

You need to add few ounces of coolant to the reservoir. The reservoir is located under the hood. It is a white plastic that has liquid in it. Please see picture below of the coolant reservoir.

How do you check the radiator fluid?

There should be a coolant reservoir under the hood which is labeled engine coolant only. There are marks on the side that state cold and hot level (engine cold or engine hot). Fill to the appropriate level with a pre-mix 50/50 solution from the parts store.

How to check the coolant level

There is a coolant reservoir that is located under the hood. There will be a indicator on the side of it saying full when cold or hot. Fill a 50/50 mixture to the level depending on the vehicle engine temp.

Bmw 320i alpina has a yellow light shaped like a water cannister. What is this telling me?

It means your radiator is low on coolant. Not a good thing to leave go. There should be a reservoir under the hood that you put the coolant into. Chances are it has a hot and cold fill level. Check your manual to see if you should use 50/50 coolant or full strength. Fill it to the cold fill level. Drive the car as usual and check it again after a day. It may need to be topped off as some of the coolant will have made it's way into the radiator and coolant stream. It is usual for some of the coolant to evaporate over time so it isn't anything to worry about unless it starts happening regularly. Good luck.

Why does my defroster and heater only blow out cold air in my 2004 dodge intrepid

Check your coolant reservoir under the hood. Your water/antifreeze mixture is probably low because with the smart design of this car low coolant first starves the heater core of coolant before the level gets so low that you hurt your engine. Likely you will have to add coolant a few times before the system gets all the air out of the heater core and engine caused by letting it get low, so check a couple of times a day until the coolant level in the reservoir remains at the Max Fill line when checked a few different times. That will signal when the system has removed all the air from the coolant system.
