I've been living with this problem over 2 yrs.. My 1997 Pontiac trunk does not work. I would love to know how to fix it myself.. since I can't even hardly afford to pay for the gas. When I bought it, I noticed right away that my lock on the trunk would only work 50% of the time. I could turn the key but nothing happened. So I used the lever inside until that broke :( Now my trunk has been stuck shut ever since.. anyone know what I need to do ?
This sounds like a similar problem I had with my driver's door last summer. Its most likely the latch mechanism. It isnt very difficult to replace if you take your time and dont get too excited if you run into difficulties. The downside to your problem is you will have to get the part from a GM dealer, it SHOULD only run you about $60, don't quote me on this it's just an estimate based on prices where I live and a small markup based on what I pay at a discount.
Now as far as replacing it, your best bet would be to pickup a repair manual at your local auto parts store. Chilton's seems to be the favorite because of the detail they put into their instructions... if anyone in your area sells them (around here they are hard to come by) I use Haynes manuals because they are easy to find, and not horribly high priced (Advance Auto Parts sells them for around $20) . As far as opening your trunk goes, if you have fold down back seats, your best bet would be to climb into the trunk with a flashlight and screwdriver, and carefully try to pop the latch from inside.
I hope at least some of this helps. GOOD LUCK!

I have the same problem with my 1997 Grand Prix. I know I have nothing in the trunk to jam it shut but I still can't open it?
