I have an 1997 Audi A4 1.8 SE. Towards the end of a long motorway drive the power steering failed, a few miles on from there the engine started overheating and both the coolant and then the battery light came on (my battery is new). Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be?

either broke the drive belt for your accessories or you have a pulley that is preventing the belt from turning- is the only way those systems will fail like that.

Timing belt was broken whilst i was driving on the motorway now wondering where can i get used engine from? how much it should cost me

i had to call every scrap dealer in england(nearly) to find a compatible unit.(skoda.vw.audi.with same output will fit,BUT they produce power differently at different engine speeds...)the blocks/heads are the same though.i managed to get the whole front end of the car for about £1000. NOT CHEAP.if the block was not damaged ,only the head and pistons/rods.your looking at around £1200 for new.../250 scrap head

2000 A4: notchy gear change when the engine is hot

Check the gearbox oil - has this been changed (with the wrong grade) just before the problem started ? May also be too little oil, from a small leak - which will get very thin when then inevitably overheating. Best to change the gearbox oil, note if lots of sludge or debris comes out (or is attached to the drain plug). If oil is the problem, total siezure may be just down the road.
