To remove the c clip, you need to remove the shaft that retains the spider gears. Depending upon which design you have it's held in either by a bolt or roll pin at one end. Once the shaft is out, be careful rotating the carrier as the spider gears tend to lag behind and can fall out. I usually stick my finger into the shaft hole and turn the driveshaft very slowly till I can access the clip.(turn too fast or hard and it can hurt your finger though) To remove the clip, after the shaft is out, just push the axle in and the clip will come right out.

Testimonial: "thanks....got conflicting reports whether axle was c clip type or not. Turns out it was not the c clip type. Oh well, wanted to change rearend grease!"

What holds the axle from coming out?

There is a "c" clip on the inboard end of the axle inside the differential gear carrier. To get to it you need to punch out the roll pin that holds the spider gear cross shaft in the carrier and slide that shaft out, then push the axle in and remove the clip. Careful not to let the spider gears walk out if you turn the center section!!.

How do you replace the rear axle collar?

Remove the wheel. Push the brake caliper piston back with a prybar or heavy screwdriver to make clearance to remove the caliper. Remove the entire caliper assembly by removing the 2 large bolts with an 18 mm socket and breaker bar.(they are tight!). Remove the rotor. Remove the 4 nuts on the axle retaining ring located behind backing plate using a 9/16" wrench. Attach a slide hammer to the wheel studs on the axle and hammer the axle out. Put the axle in an arbor press and press the bearings off of the axle. Press new bearings, seal and collar back onto the axle. Reassemble the rotor, caliper, etc. This can be done at home if you have access to a slide hammer and arbor press and some basic hand tools.

How do i take a rear rotor off 2004 jeep cherokee

Remove the caliper slide bolts and take the caliper loose and hang caliper with a wire to something. Don't let the weight of the caliper to be supported by the brake hose.

Next, remove and discard the O-ring securing the rotor to the axle studs, and remove the rotor. Hope this helped and good luck.

Replacing a rear axle on a 94 jeep grand cherokee 2wd

take the rear cover off of the rear end. make sure you have something to let the fluid drain in. turn the carrier until you see a 5/16ths bolt. take the bolt out and let the pin in the center of the carrier slide down enough to be able to slide the axle inward. that will release the c-clip. then when the c-clip i removed you can just pull the axle out of the houseing but mak sure to not let the carrier spin any while you are pulling the axle out.

Rear Axle Seal Replacement

remove rear tires, then remove brake calipers and rotors, then remove the 4 nuts (each side) that hold the axle shafts to the axle tube (located around the axle tube behind the backing plate) then using a slide hammer pull the axle shafts out, next using a die grinder and an air hammer get he retainer collar and the bearing off (without damaging the axle shaft) then remove the seal and the outer race which will still be in the housing. next put it all back together, make sure the plate with the studs is still on then slide the seal, bearing, then retainer on (all new parts) and using a press push them all the way back on. then is simple reassembly.
