The growling noise that you are hearing when you accelerate is likely caused by a problem with your timing chain. I recently purchased a 2004 Ascender with the 4.2l in-line six cylinder motor, and under the 60 day warranty, the fan clutch and water pump had to be replaced. The mechanic told me that the fan clutch wears out causing an out-of-balance condition which puts extra strain on the water pump, which was leaking. Another issue may be that the timing chain needs to be looked at, because the tension wheel/gear for the chain wears out, making the timing chain sloppy. Then the chain flops around inside the housing, making a similar noise to the one you describe. Have your mechanic/technician check it out.
Take a dry bar of soap and touch it against the sides of the belt(s) while the engine is running. If the noise goes away for a little while, the noise is from the belt settling into the grove of the pulley. Belts can really make loud pooping noises.
If this has no effect, then your timing chain may be too loose for the timing chain tensioner to compensate, and the chain is slapping against the inside of the timing chain cover.
If this is the case, do not let this condition go on. The timing chain cover is aluminum, and the chain is high grade steel. The chain will wear a hole in the cover if it is hitting the inside of it, and that is allowed to continue.
Dear Rubbing Noise, The correct and long term repair for this would be to replace the chain and timing chain tensioners.Only saying to replace the chain seeing as how it's been slapping on metal, where it's not supposed to.This will cure your problem and you will be a happy camper, HOPE I COULD HELP!!!
That is correct. If your engine is whinning at about 2000 rpm's and its a high pitch whine, you need upper timing chains and chain tensioners. aka plastic gizmo as you called it. The timing chains ride off the plastic portion of the tensioner causing the noise, basically the chain is riding on steal stub from within the tensioner, that's where the noise is coming from. Waranree on this is 5years or 60000 miles which ever comes first. And the new tensioners are updated parts.
