P1131 is "Lack of H02S-1,1 Switch, Sensor indicates lean" I'd say you've got a bad Heated Oxygen Sensor at Bank 1, Sensor 1.

My 2001 S40 has a check engine code of P0133 and P0133PD; what does this mean?

P0133 OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description

Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank1, Sensor1)
What does that mean? This involves the front oxygen sensor on Bank 1. This code indicates the engine air fuel ratio is not being adjusted by the oxygen sensor signal or the ECM as expected to do so, or not adjusted as often as expected to do so once the engine is warmed or under normal engine use.
Symptoms You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms.
Causes A code P0133 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • The oxygen sensor is faulty
  • The wiring to the sensor is broken / frayed
  • There is an exhaust leak
Possible Solutions The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If the code comes back, the problem is more than likely the front Bank 1 oxygen sensor. You will likely wind up replacing it but you should also consider these possible solutions:
  • Check and fix any exhaust leaks
  • Check for wiring problems (shorted, frayed wires)
  • Check the frequency and amplitude of the oxygen sensor (advanced)
  • Check for a deteriorating / contaminated oxygen sensor, replace if necessary
  • Check for inlet air leaks
  • Check the MAF sensor for proper operation
Not sure about the PD code.

Service engine light comes on

This GM's definition of this code:
P1404 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Closed Position Performance
The most common reasons are either the EGR valve position sensor is defective, or the EGR valve is not fully closed due to carbon.

328i BMW, and the EML light is on

Sometimes you can reset the engine warning light by disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or more (be sure you have your stereo unlock code if needed).
That is not a good solution, it is better to diagnose and eventually fix the problem.
Have the car computer scanned with a code reader, the codes you get in return witll tell you exactly where to find the problem.

Here is the code list.

To get the codes the code reader must be connected to the car computer.

sometimes on Bmw you may need a Interface 16 pin Adapter, depending on the code reader.

Here is a home user code reader : PocketScan™ OBD II Code Reader (AXRCP9125 ...

Here is a good scaner.

Always better having the job done at a qualified garage.

P0401. P0133, P1131- emmision test

Based on what the tech manuals say I would change the DPFE sensor for the EGR Valve, careful not to tear the special silicone rubber hoses that go to it from the exhaust, as a Ford dealer tech I saw these codes allot, and the DPFE sensor was almost always the issue or the hoses going to it.
