SOURCE: u-joint replacement

Yes, but the cost of the u-joints/cv-joints (both ends) plus the labor involved in swapping out the u-joints, make a good argument for just replacing the half shaft as a unit. It's a lot quicker and cleaner.

SOURCE: How do replace front axle bearings on a 92 jeep

You have to pull off the wheel, brake assembly, and rotor. If it is a 4x4, i suggest you take it to a mechanic. If it isn't, once you pull all that off you will see a little cap cover. take a small screwdriver and pop off the cap. There will be a clip. pull off the clip and pull out the axle bearing. Make sure you grease the axle bearings before you put the new one in. Then put it back together in the reverse of these instructions. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: replacing a rear axle on a 94 jeep grand cherokee 2wd

take the rear cover off of the rear end. make sure you have something to let the fluid drain in. turn the carrier until you see a 5/16ths bolt. take the bolt out and let the pin in the center of the carrier slide down enough to be able to slide the axle inward. that will release the c-clip. then when the c-clip i removed you can just pull the axle out of the houseing but mak sure to not let the carrier spin any while you are pulling the axle out.

SOURCE: how hard is it to replace the cv joints in the

If you have never done this work before it is a 6 of 10. If you have any experience at all, it's about a 4.
Basic instructions are to remove the center cap from the wheel and put it back on the car. Put car on the ground. Use a socket fitted with a solid breaker bar (not jointed) and use a 5foot pipe over the bar to break the axle nut free. (remove cotter pin before putting wheel back on) Nut torque is 175lbs so expect it to be tight.
Remove the wheel, caliper and rotor, remove the three 12point bolts from behind the hub bearing bot not all the way. Use a socket you don't want and place it on one of the 12 point bolts and hit it with a large hammer.
Alternate position of the socket from one side to the other so the bearing is driven out straight. Once the bearing is free, fully remove the bolts and pull the axle through the bearing hole in the knuckle.
When replacing the axle keep the end from dragging along the bottom of the axle tube. If that happens you risk pushing the inner seal next to the carrier bearing out of the tube (lots more work to replace that)
Remainder of the job is just putting everything back together..

What size is the axle nut on a 97 jeep grand cherokee 4X4 5.2? Also what size are the E-torx on the back side of the hub?

my socket set goes to 1-1/4": and 36mm.
my e-torx kit has all sizes, one can need.
with no sets. you must measure them. it's not covered in the FSM.
only 175ft/lbs on the axle nut and need for a torque wrench that big.
kit 1:
http://www.sears.com/titan-tools-13-pc-e-torx-socket-set/p-00926107000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&kpid=00926107000&kispla=00926107000P

the better question is ,is the axle nut SAE or metric.
most real Chrysler built are metric.
so that big nut, at that torque needs 1/2' drive
and the torque wrench to match.
id bet this covers that
http://www.harborfreight.com/13-piece-12-drive-metric-deep-wall-impact-socket-set-67904.html

you could off the hub cap and measure the nut, with a metric rule.
the external torx same. with a caliper measure the head.
then use the e-torx table to mach it.
bet the first ever to post that. its rare to ask.
most folks just have the 2 sets. ( a life time investment if ever there was)
here is the table i uses, if ever
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx

good luck working with only 2 bits.

Just bought a 94 jeep grand Cherokee all wheel drive and it is making a loud noise and wanders all over the road . what can the problem be

yes the tire size is very important! however assuming everything is the correct equipment the wandering problem is likely the u-joints in the front axles binding. If this is the case the front axle u-joints need to be replaced. This is very common on 4x4 vehicles with solid front axles. Good luck!

I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee 4x4 it is starting to hop when turning

It's the gears in the front diff. that are bad. You will need to replace those gears or the entire front solid axle.

How big of a job is it to pull both front axles out to replace u joints do u have to drop tne bottom ball joints

Jeep actual made this pretty easy to do.

Remove the caliper and rotor.

Remove the axle nut.

Remove the three bolts that secure the wheel bearing to the knuckle.

Remove the wheel bearing.

The axle will slide out the opening of the knuckle that the wheel bearing sits in.

I need to replace the boots on the front c/v joints on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Do I have to split the ball joints or is there a faster way

Ball joints can stay in place. I generally disconnect the tie rod end to make it easier to work. You need to remove the axle nut, brake caliper and rotor then the bearing hub. The axle comes through the hole where the hub was. I recommend that you get a rebuilt axle as once dirt gets into the joint it gets unreliable and the price of just the joint is so close to what a reman axle costs, it is worth the $ just in aggravation elimination alone!

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4X4 4.0L. Just recently bought and there's a popping noise in the front and when turning sharply it's like the wheels lock and the jeep refuses to move and it's also...

sounds like a bad cv joint in one (or both) of the front axles. is the popping sound more prevalent when in reverse, with the wheel turned? if so, i'd assume that it is a bad cv joint and one or both front axles will need to be replaced.

I just replaced the axle u-joints on the front of my 1996 jeep cherokee, now the axle is making a clicking noise.

hello, i hope this helps, if remanufactured axle shafts were installed, it is VERY likely that they are bad! the quality of the rebuild is only as good as the minimum wage rebuilder that did the job! if they are new axle shafts, double check the tourqe on your spindle nut! good luck, marty
